this is really unusual for southern maryland. single digit temps, below zero wind chills.....really confusing the dogs. i put them out to go to the bathroom and they're ready to come back in almost as quickly as they went out. the little jotul couldn't keep up, i had to fire up the summit a couple of days ago.
If burning 24/7 cycle the backup heating system a couple times a day during this weather. More if you have a cold basement.
Got the Wood Stove (30NC) cruizin in the basement.
Got the Pellet Stove (Quadrafire) on low in the living room.
Got the Heat Pump (Greenspeed) keeping things evenly distributed.
And to top it all off....
The wife has the Gas oven on in the kitchen baking cookies.

Not a lot of snow here in north central nj usa... but I haven't seen the stones/gravel in the 400' driveway in a few weeks... cold today with 4" of powder over the ice.. may be 18 F today.
It's Sunday so spending some time in front of the wood stove insert (Quad) but the near new (old one was used for 21 years) Waterfurnace Geothermal HP can handle this cold, running almost 100% of the time (using about 2.5 KWatt), but only as long as we have electricity, so-far-so-good. The open (Wide doorways) living room and Quad are running 74 degrees, and the HP is off.. but distant parts of the house are in the mid 60s at best. I use the HP fan to help move the heat, helps some. Expecting 2 degrees overnight so I'll go to bed at midnight with enough wood in the insert to keep the HP off until at least 3 AM... this gives the vertical ground loops to regain deep water/ground temps. I'm not sue how the loop at 250' deep, water table at about 30' this time of year, can get cold, but my reading shows the loop getting down to below freezing when running near full time. The heat gain across the plenum looks about normal - amazing the HP can get 35K BTU taking heat from brine at or near freezing for water. Ops, wrong forum, should be posting this in the "green room"...maybe I will.

lots of stovetending today. Right now I have 2/3 of my stove filled up with coals LOL. Trying to burn them down. I'm loving the stove I am warm and got lucky to find a source of ash after my initial troubles that is going to get me through. Now I have to work on the future so things can get cheaper.

Loving the insulation right now. I've been burning the F55 today but not too hard. Mostly soft maple. I have to put a single split (sometimes more than once) to burn down the coal pile.
Upper 60's up stairs, mid-70s in the basement, 40 in both attached garages.
Supposed to be -7 tonight with a good wind.
Gotta raise the generator up this summer. Getting tired of excavating it.

I have both stoves running on full load with some nice dry maple,cherry,and red oak. Its a nice toasty 73 degrees.
Yes, some of them are pretty edgy right now, especially those without a wood stove or generator.
Burning some wood today in north east PA. The temp maxed out at 4, now at 5pm it's 1.9. Tonight they say -7. Winds are ripping, blowing in snow drifts on the roads. I definitely noticed to keep the house at 70 I had reload when it got to coals. If not the house dropped into the upper 60. Still the wood stove is the only heat, and doing a great job.

Was 6 when I reloaded the stove at noon today, I'm so lazy, I put my sandals on and walked out to the porch in my undies to grab a another load.
I moved a bit quickly, but the snow blowing all over was rather refreshing. The the delay of finding just the filler pcs. But man did it feel nice inside when I got back in.
Yes, my headlights were on, and complete turtle head action going on...

Definitely not cold here inside anyway. Burning down coals with 3 split a lot of air and the fan on low. Forecast is for below zero here and its already 4. I try to really bring up the house temps before bed when its going to be really cold

Last summer the neighbors cut a tree down and left me some wood to burn in the backyard pit. Mostly thick branches. Then I put in the woodstove and they have been sitting around. They are a little wet still but I have done nothing but burn one little one at a time today on top of the coals trying to burn them down today. Hey it's kept me warm and I still have a coal bed LOL ... oh yeah, its the coldest day of the year!
-11f tonight. The forecast calls -35 to -40 windchill tonight, but I'm at the highest elevation in the area so likely a bit colder than that here. Finally found a dry wood supplier just yesterday that saved our bacons! I've been loading the BK Princess every 5 hours. Trying to keep the house above the mid-60's is no easy feat.

Gonna be 10* here tonite. My 2 yr old oak is finally under where it needs to be or we'd be burning elm cherry and soft maple. Got a cord of it all left. I work outside year round so 67* house when I get home feels great but no one else seems to think so . Go figure

Figured out something today in this frigid weather I wouldn't have imagined. PINE is the best wood for this weather, if your around all day. I can load full get lots of heat and very little coals and rinse and repeat keeping stove top up without the coals getting out of hand.

Im happy to be able to say this year i have enough wood left in the basement to get me thru most of march and wood outside the back door to finish up whats left of winter after that. Last year i was out by mid January. Had to run the wood furnace a bit this weekend to help the wood stove out, 70 is just a tad to chilly for my liking these days.
