going thru alot of wood this year?

My brother informed me yesterday that if things keep going the way they are that he will run out sometime in march. He started with 31/2 cord.

If he's local there is plenty to be had for purchase if need be.

Oh, and about 1-1/2 cord burnt so far...but that doesn't count all the elm I burnt this fall.

I have not had to buy wood but where do you know to get good seasoned wood around our area?

A buddy of mine has been getting cords of White Ash cut and delivered (not split) for $150 for 1 full cord right by your neck of the woods.

There are plenty of people around here selling wood...more than I've ever noticed. Most are "you pick up" type places but for a $180 he can get it delivered split (though, i don't like how small most people split). Where bouts' you at Hiram?

Yes hes right here in Howell close to me. Hes got some ash he can cut up and split of he gets that low

thats about average for a house tha size. ILL do 4 in the house and 3 in the shop at the rate Im going. As far as the murder city I assume the mean detroit. I refer to it as Detoilet. How far from Howell are you?

I've been burning 24/7 since early September. I've gone through not quite 1 1/2 cords. This is the first season with the EPA stove so I'm not sure how much wood it will use. I'm definitely happier with the performance of the EPA stove. It dissipates heat more quickly, the heat shields actually direct heat into the great room (and the rest of the house via use of a fan pointed toward the heat source) rather than heating up the masonry alcove and the blower is great for warming things up even more quickly on the cold mornings we been having lately. This week our daytime time highs are to drop below freezing. I'm hoping we don't remain in an icebox pattern for too long. Having highs in the 20s or lower gets old very quickly. At least we will reach the shortest day of the year this month and then begin the slow process of having slightly more daylight each week/month.

Here in Southeastern PA I have burned about 1/2 a cord of cherry/a little bit ash in my Woodstock Keystone. I have been keeping the basement (location of install) hot to keep the rest of the house warm, though. I'm very pleased with my setup and can't wait to burn better hardwoods in the future. I can only imagine the BTU output from Oak, Hickory, Locust, Osage, Apple, etc. compared to what I currently have.

I live just outside of Petoskey. Also, for those of you in SE Michigan, I talked to a buddy in the area who's an arborist and he's been taking down tons of Ash trees that've been attacked by the emerald ash borer...he says they can barely give the wood away and everyone in the area has tons of it laying around. I don't know what you have to do to get rid of the bugs, but it might be worth looking into...maybe putting an ad in craigs list or something for "free removal of downed trees".

We have had unseasonably cold weather here in Michigan this fall. With two stoves running full time Ive gone thru allmost two cords. Way ahead of last year

I guess we are lucking out here in my part of Maine. I heat completely with wood, and I doubt if I have used a third of a cord yet. I do get great passive solar, but the biggest factor is that we have had very little cold weather so far. I have not had a fire going since Saturday night and the house is still 64 down stairs and 69 up (with help from the sun the last two days).

We've had great weather up here so far this year!! On Dec. 1 I had over 2' of snow in my yard, today it's up to about 2.5'...the ski hills opened earlier than they have in the last decade, the snowmobilers are out in force and I'm just lovin' it!! I haven't seen this good of a start to winter since I was a kid...rock on!!

I am amazed at how fast I'm going through wood this year with my new (to me) stove. The firebox is so big compared to my large Dutchwest that despite having about the same burn time I go through way more wood. I do get a lot more heat.

I would guess I've burned a cord at least going 24/7 for almost a full month. I am burning a small wheelbarrow-full each day despite only having two big loads and one small load fed into the stove each day.

I have personally lost about 20 Ash trees and have been burning ash almost exclusively. These giants were no match for the ash bore. They mess the tree up and then move to the next.

phishheadmi, I do hope by well seasoned you mean it has been cut and split for 2 years as that is best for oak. I wouldn't worry much about the wet from rain/snow.

But what worries me is that you say you'd best get to cutting now. Well, cutting now is good for next year. I'd highly suggest you try to find some that is already seasoned for this year.



As for useage, we've used a little over 1/2 cord so far this year. A bit ahead of last year's useage.
