Hello! Have scoured the forum and hoping to get confirmation before I install my new Aspen C3. It will be going on top of laminate flooring, topped with a layer of 1/4" hardie board topped by a single sheet of 22ga brushed stainless steel, 36 wide, 42 long.

Given the ember protection and no-added R value, it appears this should be adequate, but am keen to confirm that this is enough.

Thank you for any insight!

I would extend the hearth in front of the stove as much as is reasonable. The radiant heat may cause the laminate flooring to buckle.

[Hearth.com] Floor protection for Aspen C3[Hearth.com] Floor protection for Aspen C3[Hearth.com] Floor protection for Aspen C3I can take some readings if that helpful. I haven’t had to run hard yet this season. Right now I’m 450 flu temps. Sometimes I’m close to 700 if it’s running hot. That’s a big difference in temps though.
I’ll agree with Begreen though. If you can go more, go more. Sometimes I drop coals on the wood and have to sweep them up real quick.

Hello! Thanks for your post, and I've read almost everything you've written about your Aspen :)! We're just few days away from installing and will add as much front floor coverage as we can fit. If you are able to take a reading of the floor 18" in front of your stove that would be amazing (but if not, no worries at all). Many thanks! Sara S.

And a ps - I just saw the images - thank you for taking the readings. I'm not able to see the temps in the photos, alas - do you have a sense of how hot it is running on the floor? Thanks!

About 90 in those pics. That was just warming the house back up after being gone all day.
I’ll take some more readings when the stove is cooking, but I suspect I won’t see it much over 100 if that. The warmest spot is usually about 4’ from the glass door.

I’d bring out the protection as far as you can though. 2-3’ or more. You’ll be dropping and spinning logs on the linoleum as you play Tetris to fit them in, gouging the softened floor from the heat. At times you have to scurry around to rearrange burning wood as you work the coals and load the stove, or need to adjust a load to get it to settle. Sparks and embers will jump way out the door and you’ll need a spot to lay a hot iron if you’re struggling with a load.

I did it just now. Had a stove with a bunch of coals, and some large pieces in the back that weren’t burning as fast. I was raking around trying to keep the coals in, but pull the back half of the logs to the front, and rolled out a couple nice cherries right over the ash lip and onto the floor.
I set the hot iron rake on the metal floor protection and grabbed the shovel to get the coals up. It happens several times a year that something falls out the front while working the coals over. If I set that rake on linoleum, it would melt right into it.
