Coldest day of the winter

4 F at 1:45PM here in NE PA. The winds are blowing. Tonight, I think at least -5. The house is a toasty 70F with the Oslo just idling along at 350F. It's real easy for this stove to keep this house at any temperature you want.

Update -18 at 8am. The wind was howling all day yesterday. Much calmer now, but still moving the trees around. The stove alone keep the house perfect last night. The cold doesn't bother the birds on my feeders, dozens of them out there now.

I took this photo Sunday morning at camp; not sure how accurate it is, but someone told me their car reading was -40, so it might be right. This is from Lewis County, NY, on Tug Hill. It's -33F right now, 9AM. Warming up nicely! Do you love it?

It only went down to - 12 here last night and with a full load of ash started at about 10:30, we woke up to a 66 degree living room. Upon reload it quickly went to 70. Yesterday afternoon/evening at camp the story was a little different. The little Dutchwest box stove had to work hard to overcome that falling temp and gusty wind in the leaky little barn we use for winter libations and cigars.

Ran the central for a while and have the stove cranking now to bring it back up and even things out. At these temps the stove can maintain, but not easy raise temps in here without help.

Same here JH, I leave the thermostats at 62 and the heat comes on overnight at some point. I like to run the central heat when its this cold anyway. The pipes in my garage slop sink has slushy ice from the overnight. Need to run them on and off.

It's almost as cold as last night on Long Island, but the wind is 10mph instead of 40mph and it feels a lot warmer. I just got home from work and baked myself in front of the stove. Going outside for wood now, mostly because I need to cool off a little!


I've had my oil burner thermostats on 60 too; don't think the upstairs two zones have kicked on once during this cold snap, but the basement one (which gets very limited benefit from the wood stove) has been on.

Funny thing : I have learned in my years of heating. Learned lots. I no longer push my stove, I burn as much wood on a daily basis as every other year. I just use less electric heat when it is warmer than when it is colder. Unfortnately I do not have good hardwood ( just white birch) but it seems to be working. My last electricity bill for 2 months from early December to early February ,including all of christmas (I cooked non-stop and do not have any LED lights) was $315.

But I did play outside in -20c temps with the kids this afternoon cover the skin and everything is fine.

My sister lives somewhere between Erieville & Syracuse. She posted this picture of the temp this morning when her husband went to work...yeah, that is cold...and your temp is pretty accurate.

I do the same, I've only spent $164 on oil since September so if I need the central heat I don't mind. It kicked on a couple times last night with the temp at -16 and the wind howling, your house loses heat faster when it's windy than on a calm night. It's -4 tonight and the Furnace hasn't kicked on once yet.

Very pleased with the performance of the new-to-us Hearthstone through this cold snap.
-10 ish yesterday and just now warming up to 0 this morning outside, and 60-70 in the house with no central heat going.
