. Woke up again around 2:30am and it was 73.5 to 74. Got up at 6:30am and its 73 in master bedroom and the other two reading 72.5.
But ya got it now! Way to go! You'll notice a more consistent ambient temperature throughout the house now.Well. The Verdict for the first night is in. Might drop another degree before the sun pops out but as of now its 28 outside.
The Verdict for new attic insulation: HUGE SUCCESS!! I don't even know if HUGE would be a good enough word for it. Incredible, amazing are some other words that come to mind.
I simply cannot believe the difference it has made. I got some numbers for you guys to.
Outside temp was in the mid 30s when I went to sleep at 10pm. All 3 bedrooms were reading in the 74.5 to 75 degree range. I knew it was a bit to warm for me to sleep good but I was not going to complain, I knew I could close the bedroom door some to drop the temp but didn't want to cause I really want to see what the temp was going to do throughout the night. So anyways, 75 at 10pm when I went to sleep. I woke up around 12:30am feeling like I was in a sauna. Temp then was 77
So at 6:30am master bedroom was 73, stove room was 81. 8 degree difference. Before the added insulation, depending on the temp outside the bedrooms would ALWAYS be at least 15-20 degrees colder than the stove room. I then went around and checked temps in den, dining room, kitchen, and laundry room. All in the 74 range.
Words can't describe how happy I am. Insert is heating the entire house and doing a darn fine job, could have been heating it all along if I had added the insulation sooner.
. Of course its easy for me to say that given I am in NC, I wouldn't be saying that if I was dealing with that northern weather like a lot of you are.
You'll notice a difference in not only the heat running, but wait for the Summer AC, too! It works both ways.You know it! And yes, it is so nice to walk down the hallway to the bedrooms and not feel like you just jumped in ice cold water. That's about what it felt like before, nothing like that now. Fire has died off, suppose to be low 60s next two days and only about 40 at night so I will let the heat pump work and save the wood for colder days and nights to come. Be interesting to see how long the heat pump stays off between cycles now. Before doing this insulation even if the temp was in the mid to high 40s it would not stay off I don't think more than 5 mins and it was kicked back on. Should stay off longer since the heat will now remain in the house longer.
Nice to heat the BEDROOMS now instead of the doggone ATTIC.

Did insulation Sunday and had a fire that night but let it go out Monday morning and haven't had the stove lit since. Been in low 60s during the day, has gotten down in the low 30s at night but waiting until the day time temps are staying back in the 40s before I light the stove back up, looks like it will get lit up on Saturday though.
The heat pump has been running and I have noticed that the bedrooms feel warmer with it on to and the house still feels way more equalized. Also, the heat pump stays off considerably longer between cycles.
Used to could stand a fire if the daytime temp was at 50 and no higher, with the insulation up there now it will COOK you out of the house if you light it up at that temp. I think it needs to be 45 or lower now before you have a fire, and at 45 I best have a SMALL fire.
For anyone that reads this and has less than adequate attic insulation and wonders if it will make a difference. Take ToColdHere and My word for it, DO IT! You will not regret it! In fact, you WILL regret it if you don't do it. I am glad I listened.
Its not a delayed difference either, like ToColdHere said, You will notice a difference almost immediately. That will suit those that love instant gratification and I guess that's most of us.

Its pretty neat when you get that consistent ambient temp dialed in. I have a small fire going now, but was sweating yesterday with a fire and the wife baking for 12 hours.
Can I be the only one reading this who wonders why you'd want to put a screen door on your bedroom?During the Winter I replace the door on our bedroom with this 20 dollar screen door from home depot and put a fan at the bottom blowing out our room. If the normal door is on our bedroom is like 64 degrees even though the stove is right next door. With the screen door and fan the room stays about 75.
It is probably a bit much to ask some to replace their entire door each year with a screen door, but it works well for us.

I knew my insulation was sub par, I poked my head into the attic when we moved in a few years back but all the mess discouraged me from checking it out in more detail (including lots of mouse and RAT droppings right by the door). Well due to a few things this year I wont get into here (long story) I got a bit more interested in why I'm pumping out like 3/4 of a million btu out of two stoves and still can barely get the bedrooms to 60. The bedroom I sleep has been down in the low 50's a few times when I was just burning one stove (only November too). So a couple weeks ago I got brave and crawled in... on the old half of the house I found out about half the attic had no insulation. None... I could see the back of the plaster wall and the metal of the roof, and over the finished part of the upstairs they were only 4" apart with nothing more than air. The other half had insulation but it was all wrong. Everything was insulated, the eave ends, the roof... and all sealed in plastic... everything. The plastic had condensation all over it, I'm sure at least the insulation against the metal roof was soaked.
Then there is the new side of the house. They went real cheap on the construction. The attic there I think was ok when I checked but I'll have to recheck (been years). But the cathedral ceiling I'm guessing isnt properly insulated and I'm not sure if there is anything I can do about that... and the walls (just 2x4 and some leaks I haven't been able to remedy).
What a mess. I was planning on starting a new thread here with some pictures and diagrams and ask for some advice. Other problem is I may be moving. Not sure if putting a ton of work and money into the attic is going to gain me anything in the sale so I might be pissing it away. If I can do the work myself, and without spending a fortune (since there is plenty of other areas of the house I need to put money in too) then I'll try.
