Hi - we're new to wood stoves and just had an Apex 42 installed. We've only had a couple fires so far, but have noticed that the cat temperature gets really high (1100 to 1200 degrees F) with a fire box about 75% full and a couple hours into the burn. Is that normal? The owner's manual is vague, but seems to indicate that the normal operating temp for a high burn is around 600 degrees. The other concern is that once the temperature gets above 1200, the door won't open -- we can lift the lever only a little and then it seems the latching mechanism is stuck. We have to leave the bypass open, turn the air control down all the way to the left and wait for the temp to drop to around 800; then we can open the door. By that time, there are orange coals, but no flames. Thinking this could be a safety feature, but can't find it documented. Again, we're newbies, so any insight is appreciated -- thanks!

Yes, this is normal. The cat will be a bit more active when new.

I'm not sure about the door issue. It sounds like the latch might be need a little adjusting by the dealer. See page 20 of the manual.

Thanks, appreciate the response - maybe the door issue will resolve itself once the cat is broken in. Do you happen to know if it's OK to run the stove with the bypass pulled out? Thanks again

The door issue may just be a matter of a small latch adjustment, but as the door gasket gets repeatedly compressed it will have a little less thickness over time and that may eventually resolve the issue.
The bypass is opened for starting and reloading. Running the fireplace with it open all the time is not advised.
