Anyone else's dog sit three inches from the stove?

Our female shih tzu sits with me while I load the stove. She'll sit in front of it looking at me if she wants heat. The male is more interested in attacking me when I crumple newspaper into a ball. I need to bring over an extra sheet for him. We're both easily amused.

This has got to be the fastest growing thread I've seen in this forum.


I had several cats who, when they were kittens, would get IN the stove when I'm trying to start it up for the day. I looked away once and one jumped in and singed his tail on a burning Starterlogg®. That still didn't stop him from jumping in there the next time. They always wanted to sniff the flames.

My Golden Retriever/Shepard mix stays close to the stove also. Fur gets so hot I can't hold my hand on it. In the summer he's happy to sleep on his dog bed across the room. In the winter while the stove is going he's half on the brick hearth and half on the floor. Doesn't look very comfortably but he seems to like it.

Makes me sort of wonder if anyone has ever had a case of fur burning. Anyone ever get that nasty smell of caramelized hair in the air?

The worst is when an animal is that close and breaks wind. The only thing worse than a dog/cat fart is a HOT dog/cat fart.

This is the 1st full winter I've had a wood stove. My dog stands next to the stove, half asleep. Today I watched him jerk his head away because he got too close and his nose touched hot metal;the stove was @ 500F. I can't figure out why he stands instead of lying down, but he's not very brainy.

My lab and cat both snuggle in front of the insert...kinda the forbidden love The cat would crawl in if he could. In fact I have the picture before I ever struck a match to the insert...I will see if I can find it and pi$$ off the peta people :cheese:

Actually--"brag,brag"--our three cats used to lay right in front of the hearth. Not anymore, now they can be found on the back of the sofa, or halfway up the stairs.

Reason is because this Bear puts out twice the heat that the old (pre-epa PE) used to do. Hell, I don`t even wear a shirt downstairs anymore, just a t-shirt. ;-P

Our cat prefers the "Big Black Heat Machine" in the winter months. The rest of us in the house might as well not exist when the stove is fired up.

I had a husky mix a while back that would actually lie down under my old consolidated dutchwest. I don't think that with the shield it was all that hot under there, but it sure was a funny sight - real hard-core sled dog of the north!

Mine lays close, but the other coincidental part of this is that my dog sits just like yours with his hands crossed...EXACTLY! That's funny!

Our new puppy quickly figured out that the stove was THE place to be! What's funny is to watch her start out on the pad and gradually move away from it as it gets hotter. I don't need the IR any more; I have a dog-mometer!

My parent's black lab (why is it always a lab?) used to park her butt right in front of the fireplace and her fur used to get so hot; you'd burn your hand petting her. Then again, she'd follow the sun across the floor for warmth.

Our Daschund loves the stove, he will lay right in front of it almost all day. It's really funny in the morning when the stove isn't that hot yet, he comes back in from his morning potty break and just cocks his head sideways looking at the stove wondering why it isn't hot yet. I keep thinking he is going to burn his nose or something but so far no problems.

Well its not inside. But I always got to watch my horse when I burn brush in the pasture. He will stand with his feet six inches from the fire and his head over it. He wouldn't look good burnt! He also carrys firewood off of the pile and drops it in the field. And steals long neck bottles off the fourwheeler but he cannot tip them up so he just slobbers them up and drops them. He really thinks he is a golder retriever.

Clancy (see Avatar) can usually be found on the back deck when the stove is running hot. He just isn't that into the heat. One time, he burned his tail feathers on the window while wagging a bit too enthusiastically while walking by. Stunk up the whole house!
