We set our first fire this morning.House is in the smoke. Set it to midpoint. Open the windows and left the house. Wife had to stay home incase it gets smokier and triggers smoke detector.
What is your BK model?

Smokier? where is the smoke coming from? I did my first fire a few days ago on the same stove and I had no smoke issue...certainly not enough to be concerned about a detector.

It’s in my signature - 16’4”.

I know it says so but of double wall and I thought was just the black pipe.
You are under minimum requirement for your setup. You should add a little more length with those two 45. I am sure you will do better with more length.

Our first fire set the detectors of for about and hour, LOTS of smoke, house wide open for a few hours.

I do have one of my setups with two 45s and one foot run between but my total length is around 19' with termination cap.

This plan seems dangerous to the point of being life-threatening.

I can just see my wife reacting to the news that the house is full of paint fumes, everyone is leaving, but she needs to stay and listen for the smoke detector.

Lots? It was one year ago, and I remember it smelled bad and there was smoke in the house, but certainly not enough to switch on the smoke detectors... I opened all windows BEFORE starting the fire though. And the wife left the house before me!

I also think he might run into trouble with the part of the plan where he comes back to the house later!

Well, maybe he can put a wood stove in his shed to keep him warm this winter.

I think mine set off the smoke detectors on two different burns. I used a box fan after I realized just how stinky it was.

Next stove gets to do its first few burns burns outdoors in the summertime.

Interestingly, first fire in my wood cooker gave off little smoke (if any) and smelled little if any. Maybe the water slowed down things and the stove got “cooked” simmering instead of grilling

Haha. Actually I and kids left for their story writing class. So if it was said it would have been “better her than us”!
But no.
I would rather die before her. Without her, life would be unbearable even with a BK stove!

I wish we had a space for a shed. We could use it for wood storage. I could only put the stove to the garage

Smoke came from different parts of stove. I think paint was curing all over. No smoke from door. It created smoke but didn’t trigger the detectors.

It’s been 6 hours and it’s run some time at medium but mostly at high. It was less than a half load containing pine, cherry and some kindling of oak pieces that I posted pictures of before.
Cat seems hairline off from active zone even though it is on high. And Cat doesn’t glow through steel cover.Is this normal?

It doesn't need to be glowing to be working.

It's probably out of active because the stove's out of wood. 6 hours on high is a long time. High means 600+ stovetop, take off your pants and make some frozen drinks time. Or maybe that's just my house....

I’ve also found that the location for the combustor gauge is less than ideal. You have to look at it straight on or it could appear in the inactive zone but it is still hovering above it. While yours is most likely inactive I’m just saying that for the future.

Like what was said cat doesn’t have to be glowing to be working. As long as it is in the active zone it’s working.

Thanks for the tip.
I reloaded it to half full.There was very little piece left that was enough as coal.
I thought the same that cat is inactive so after reloading it I let the bypass door open until it goes into active zone.
Now stove set in high, homemade popcorn is ready, it is family movie time!

Popcorn season has arrived apparently! Just finished a helping myself

What was the t-stat setting? I do get 24hrs burn, but I must “ride the hole” for the whole burn. Cat indicator is always barely in active zone.
Are you sure you’ve found the absolute minimum setting? I stalled the cat 3 or 4 times before finding the “sweet spot”.

Remember to not read cat therm temps with fans on...wait 15 minutes after fans are turned off.

Cat is barely at active line with almost all the way down. I didnt pack it so tightly could that be the reason? Or it does need more wood?Or what could be the reason?
After the thermostat in active zone do you close the bypass right away or it should be closed after gauge is well into the red zone?
After closing the bypass door, do you set the swoosh slowly or at one turn to the desired level?

You need to give that stove something to chew on !!

Once it hits the active zone I close the bypass. The manual says to lower the thermostat in increments but I just set it where I know I need it after the char period.

It may stay right on the active zone in your picture for a little while longer but it most likely is at its last stretch with what I see remaining.
