That is what finally sold me on going with this stove. It took me a while to realize what is now painfully obvious to me, and that is a radiant stove just cannot work when surrounded by uninsulated stone exterior walls. We have always noticed that, even with the stoves running, we need to run our fin-line (convective) baseboard radiators, to make the house feel comfortable. When you have uninsulated stone, there is no such thing as heating the objects around you, it's all about heating the air within. So, the Jotul Firelights are a great heater in most applications, but I think we are going to see an enormous improvement in our comfort with a convective stove.

Thinking pretty hard about adding some height to my chimney. The A30 manual calls for 15' minimum, I am at 13'6".
Below 0dF I got plenty of draft, below -30dF I am golden, but getting up above 0dF I got a fussy stove again.
Last fall when my wood pile was at 12% wet basis I was good below freezing. I have had some spring that days already this spring with the freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw daily cycle going on, my wood is up to 16% MC and climbing, my local relative humidity is running 75+% on days above freezing.
I could pop a one foot section off the top of my chimney, replace it with a four footer and take my total chimney height to 16'6".
I don't want to go too tall- all this height is outside the heated envelope and I don't want a blast furnace on my hands next winter at -55dF.
Any guesses on how tall is too tall for -60dF? My local dealer has a open house coming up, I guess I'll have to go.

Don't I remember reading you running the stove on "3" when it was in the big minus numbers? With a taller chimney if you turn the t-stat down you should get the same heat production so you shouldn't have a blast furnace. Whatever changes the additional chimney height makes you should be able to handle with the t-stat. Now if you are currently running the t-stat on the bottom of the range on the really cold days and still getting crazy heat production you may have a problem adding additional height.

I talked to my local dealer, the folks running BKs in basements are doing fine with 30' of stack, but the local dealer doesn't suggest going over 30' at 64 degrees north latitude.
I am going to have it done in one trip once the snow is off the roof. I'll brush it after burn season and them have them come out once for a level II clean to see how much crud my brushing leaves behind, drop a camera, take the one foot piece off the top, add a 4' piece to the top, I'll go into next season with 16'6" of stack.
What I am getting now in spring shoulder season is 18%MC wood + 13'6" of stack + outdoor ambients above 0dF = run the stove on wide open thermostat or stall the cat.
Not the end of the world, I would love to fill the box up to see if I can get 24-36 hour burns out of it with the Tstat turned down low, for now I just light a couple small ones every day.
I don't want a taller stack now badly enough to climb up there on my snowy roof, and I have an idea about keeping my outdoor wood from sucking up humidity this time next year.

This Seems strange to me. I clean or service a few dozen a year and rarely see any paint failure. If I do, it's from a steamer or over fire. I do a little touch up on the stove top, but painting the whole stove isn't necessary

Joful, I know your stoves are essentially in a cave. I do understand what your are saying. It's just not a common issue and is a BIG sign of excessive moisture within the home.
I guess my post was misleading. I don't get rust as long as there is paint.
But the wife does spill a little water now and then and maybe i do get the stove a little hot also at times.
The bottom 1/2 of the stove has yet to be re painted.

That would be a great name for a rock band.
I saw it and didn't have the issues you speak of. It was slightly bluer than the Hearthstone/Jotul equivalent, but not horribly so. I was surprised Chris was so down on it.

What's odd to me, but I'm sure I'm just missing the details on this, is that there are people... individual hearth.com members, no less... who report getting their stoves enameled without any issue. If BK was having trouble with one vendor, maybe they could just try another?

Always easier said than done, I guess, but it does seem there's substantial demand for a good black enamel option. Look how many Jotul sells in that Blue Black Enamel.

It's coming... just figured I'd wait until it's a done deal, and the stoves are installed, first. Just the same... mind locking that one down for me, now?
The issue is that the blue/black from Jotul is an enamel paint, not a porcelain enamel. There are a lot of issues with enamel stove part, many parts don't match. Each part will be a little different color, so it's hard to put a stove together. The color was NOT Black, it was midnight blue. Black enamel is easy, and has very little demand.

She has an apricot brother. He is very tight-lipped and doesn't drool at all, unless he thinks he is going to get a bite of whatever I'm eating. I know none of those spots are from him.

That contradicts information I had about that finish on the Jotul. I was told that on the Jotul it is a baked enamel finish. It just lacks the clear coat majolica final finish.

I'm a guy, so I'm half colorblind in that blue-black spectrum, anyway. My "blue black enamel" Jotul looks like low-gloss black, to me! Lol

It wasn't without issue ............If you look at post # 13 from the thread, you will see that I mentioned there were a few glitches. I just didn't go into detail . To me they were minor .
One issue was similar to what webby3650 stated about getting the color uniform on all the parts. if the parts are put in the ovens in different batches the they will come out a slightly different shade from each other......They have to be baked all at they same time in the same oven with the same temp , time , color application amount , and all the other variables that happen with each firing.
My stove parts varied in color slightly . They couldn't fire all of them together at the same time , so they did it in uniform groups. That way it looks uniform on the stove. The final finish looked better than I expected because the stove had highlights to it. It didn't look monotone or all one shade. And the shade difference was slight so it doesn't look contrasty.
The lid to the Ashford also warped on them slightly when they fired it ....Don't know why . But they got it pretty much got that corrected by re-baking and bracing it.
Its obviously not a cut and dry process to enamel a stove . There are many variables that change each time a stove is fired.
Yes, it's essentially the base coat. It's missing the porcelain or majolica part of the process.

Very nice dogs. I knew a guy with a Mastiff. You could put a steak in the bottom of a 35 gallon trash can, lay it down on its side and that dog could not reach the steak due to his large head and shoulders. But he could push that trash can until it hit a wall and then the trash can was doomed!
By the way, his name was TANK!

Does anyone who went to the show in Nashville have any photos of BK's new colors, next to the old? Or at least in the same room, or on the same camera? Specifically, I want to compare their new Midnight Blue Black to their regular black finish.
My dealer is asking me what color I want, and I can't tell the difference between the two. My only photo of a black stove comes from the BK website (well-lighted photo shoot quality photo), and my only photo of the Midnight Blue Black comes off someone's camera phone at the recent show... not ideal for making a comparison.
