I just moved to SC and it doesn’t look like wood stoves are too popular here but gas fireplaces are. I am building a new house and would like to heat with wood or at least partially heat with wood. I will have around 2700 to 3200 sq. feet. I’m looking for a stove that looks like a fireplace so I guess that would be an insert but there will be no masonry shell to insert it into. I want a nice looking non-catalytic unit but the only one I have been able to find is the Vermont Castings Sequoia II. There must be some other models out there that I can compare this unit to. Also, why are there so few stoves in this category?

Howdy Blasting. Sounds like you're looking for a zero clearance (ZC) fireplace. There are several manufacturers. VC, Kozy Heat, Fireplace Extrodinair, Napoleon, BIS, Lennox are some brands.

Do a search on the forums for ZC fireplace and you should get a lot of links.

Look at RSF wood high efficiency fireplaces at industrial chimney company. Also (broken link removed)

Since you want to heat with wood, you will want to look for "high efficiency" zero clearance woodburning fireplaces. You will want to avoid the "decorative" type low efficiency woodburning units made by several manufacturers such as Vanguard, Superior, Majestic, Monesson, and others.

Since you want non-catalytic, you can cross the Travis Fireplace Xtrordinaire off your list as it is catalytic.

Most of the BIS/Lennox are non-catalytic exept one model (Bis Panorama/Lennox Brentwood, I think). Kozyheat is non-C, Napoleon High Country is non-C. Some RSF are non-C, and the OPEL can be either non-C or catalytic.

Happy searching.
