Unfortunatly at todays cost of materials unless you can get extreme discounts you may be hard pressed to get final cost below $3000.
I have built 6 splitters in the last 15 years , steel was free friend had a fab shop, hydraulic components were surplus, axles and tires no charge from freind at junk yard. Still cost over $1000 to build. In no rush it average a year to gather the materials at the right price.

Don't need much number crunching. $2k in materials and I'm betting it's more when all final adding in paint, consumables and overhead. How many hours labor? Trying to sell retail and standing behind it and having insurance for lability?
