You all cut your pieces under 4ft, and still stack them in single rows, doncha? Then you got face cords, not cords! ;lol

Personally, I split by hand, so my lengths tend to vary, because I'll cut through the big knots and funny curves; probably average around 16". I'd have a lot more ugly pieces if I really tried to go for exact lengths. When I'm cutting up a tree, I'll leave it in lengths as long as I can handle; I'm usually hauling from my own woods, so I want to handle as few pieces as possible. Then when I get em up to the house, I'll divide em into 3-5 pieces.

IMO, face cords is the more "honest" measurement; even if it's less precise. If you were buying it, certainly you'd want measure the length and convert to cords for price comparison purposes. But everybody around here tends to use about the same average length.

Anybody here use something other than 16" avg?
18" here. On a pallet 40" wide allows for two rows and 4" gap. Also easier to estimate full cords (i.e. 8' x 3' x height).

the OP is saying that moisture leaves his wood faster than everyone else. we need vinny to cross-examine.

I was re=splitting several pieces recently as well and discovered the following:
1) I can only really feasibly test the splits at the top of the pile. The lower splits are locked into each other.
2) I split up a red oak a couple years ago and made two stacks, both covered with roofing. The stack out in the open is reading around 18%, whereas the stack along my wood fence and under some trees is reading at low 30s, so I will be moving that stack and not stacking there again.

What isn't in evidence is how long the wood had been split before he bought it. So we have no idea how long it has been drying.

I live about 10 minutes from Jiminy Peak and if you choose you can buy a cord of firewood at $250-$300 per cord (green of course and amount questionable) from a host of CLs advertisers or you can buy it for an average of $180 in the local area at an honest quantity if you ask around. And that's delivered by the way.
yeah, you're on walk road aren't you? my brother is in Stephentown and I grew up on alps mt road....we've chatted about this before. last year, my brother got a log load that he cut and split and is ready for this year. cheaper that way. not sure what he will do this year for next. I think he will get some from one brother on the old homestead on Alps mt road, or another in horseheaven. he has a friend that sells firewood by the truckload in Albany and troy.....making a killing

It sure doesn't sound like it was freshly-split live wood if he's getting those readings. If you toss it on a fire and get just a little moisture on the ends instead of water bubbling out, you may get away with it. I like my wood sub-18% ideally, so don't be disappointed if you are disappointed. ;lol :(

That sounds more like it. I realize it's more expensive out there but I'm saying to myself "What, you buy 15 cords and you're still paying 300+ a cord, you don't even get a volume discount??" But it may have been split for a while, or from dead or dying trees, judging from the readings he's getting. Maybe the guy is selling semi-dry wood and charging a premium.
is there actually a lower class social hierarchy where someone that refers to a face cord is actually doesn't get invited to the trailer?....since everyone on this board is so successful in life they have to go scrounging for firewood instead of just buying it, i guess me and every other person that buys their wood in face cords are just a bunch of unsuccessful, uneducated idiots
Why would a successful man of letters, bestowed with a vastly superior intellect, even want to burn wood? Wouldn't such a person have much more important things to do with his time? I therefore have to conclude that this thread is a sham, and was generated by one of the increasingly common troll bots unleashed on the internet by the illuminati for purposes that aren't yet clear to us lower life forms. ;lol
