Wood ID......

My Brother in Law dropped off some wood on our piles out back and im not sure what it is. Here's a pic of the bark and the grain.

The bark peeled completely off in one roll.

I believe what you have there is Ash.

Its very hard to tell with just one piece. Especially with out a picture of the end grain. I would guess ash or a maple variety.

The bark sure looks like sassafras, if it splits really easy that is what it is, also very light wood.

It sure isn't sassafras cause it's reallllllly tough to split. Those rounds in the background are what it looks like debarked. The end grain looks just like a softwood (pine) but i've never seen a pine with this bark.

Not even close.... honey locust has very thin, smooth bark that peels up and curls, sort of like sheets.

With you saying that it is hard to split and that the bark peels off so easy, I am thinking slippery or American elm. I realize that bark is not the typical bark we see in elm but looking at those rounds in the background and the stringy piece that you split makes me think elm.

Just my 2cents.

as for easy or hard to split. any wood can be harder or easier to split.

Is it heavy? If you answer yes to this then I'm "changing" my answer to Hickory rather than Ash, although it sure looks like Ash to me. Hickory can be a bugger to split and has some very good weight to it....

Agree, dont be fooled by that elusive creature, always looks like decent wood, buts its only an ugly girl in a pretty skirt.

Looks like hickory to me. I could not see the grain picture but from the bark I would bet hickory. It has an interlace grain pattern and that is what I am seeing in the bark.

Thanks for all the replys folks. It's definately not sweetgum but i was leanin towards hickory. Funny how the end grain almost looks like a softwood.


Oh and did i mention it's NOT easy to split! lol
