Thought the flaky bark was white oak. The damaged bark was hidden in the log pile

Now I think it's maple, the bottom was eaten out by ants, and the shape of the colors is maple like.

Anybody know what type of maple?

Know what kind?

Okay.
Is the red/pink visible where the bark is damaged only for red maple?

No,That’s not how it’s ID’d. Usually by leaves, they are red buds on the branches. The leaves are different between red and silver The bark is also a little different between silver and red. I find red splits easier than silver

Bummer.
Once I rolled it I knew it wasn't white oak. But red maple is a ways down...

Ah well, one log out of many.
