Had a dead tree come down, no leaves to help ID it. I thought it was oak by the look of the bark but I when I split it I noticed the splits were very bright and white inside with little to no heart wood. What do you guys think

9 times out of 10 with that "pin hole" in the center I'd say ash as well but i think in this case it's coincidence and that is actually rot....the wood is way too white for ash IMO and ive never seen end grain get destroyed / ripped up like that from the chain with ash so Im going to go with cottonwood .

That hole in the center is from ants, they came pouring out when I split it. I myself thought the bark was a little dark to be ash

Aspen

Also the wood is relatively soft when I pushed my moisture meter in, and it is very wet 43% MC. Smells awful

Cottonwood smells like urine

Big tooth aspen or cottonwood are my guesses. The bark does look a little like red oak, but the wood doesn't.
