I'm thinking about installing either an insert or a free standing stove in my fireplace. But I need to figure out what I have first.
The fireplace itself is 37" wide, 30" tall, 26" deep. It is lined with brick, on the bottom, sides and back. The top of it is a steel damper. It has an ash chute in the bottom. It has a Thermo-Rite door on it.
I'm know it is original to the house, which was built in 1968.
I know I will need to install a liner and insulate. I know I may have clearance issues with my mantle. I know I will need to extend the hearth.
House is about 1600 sq/ft, moderately insulated. The fireplace is near the middle of the house, so there should be a pretty good chance of heating most of the place with the stove.
I would like to do a free standing stove, but would consider an insert.
What would you do here? What information am I missing?
Thanks!
Here are a few pictures.
