My favorite way to get rid of them is to dump them along the edge of the road during a snow storm. As the plow comes through he does a really nice job of spreading them out for me so that there aren't mole-hill-esque ash piles around the edge of the property.
You can spread them over the lawn, but i take mine and fill in the cracks of the patio i have. then sweep the ash into the cracks. In high concentrations they keep weed seeds from germinating. Makes it a lot easier to do yard work.
