What size woodlot do you have for cutting firewood?

I'll start the ball rolling. I estimate we have 25-30 acres of good firewood. Some of that might get sold for timber and some for chipping but we have more than we'll ever need. Here are some pictures for an example:

This picture was taken a few weeks ago. The area in the background is one area we thinned out a few years ago. It is a good deer bedding area now.

I can cut wood anywhere on 500 acres, half of which is hedgerows, fields, pasture, and a few acres of Christmas trees. All the land is a combination of 4 of our old family farms. My main cutting area nowadays is 80 acres, where a tornado went through the middle of several years ago. The loggers went through it the year after the tornado and they bought what they wanted. I've been cleaning up the leftovers ever since.

I have complete access to about 48 acres of hardwoods. I am the only cutter on these woods, so I will never catch up to the dead fall and dieing trees. But on the other hand, I keep my name thrown out to some local tree cutters and haven't had to walk into the woods in about 2 years. Kinda miss it, but I have lots of things to occupy my free time. And ya can't beat wood that is dropped into your back yard and FREE.

I've got about six acres of my own that's about two thirds dead ash trees. Couple big cottonwoods, some white oaks, and some black locust that's really starting to take off.

I've also got access to more wood than I can possibly cut thanks to some great farmer friends. They help me more than I could ever repay them.

About 10 acres(+/-) of difficult cutting and even more difficult skidding on a steep hill. A neighbor helps me a lot and we have recently been devising a plan to thin out some of the larger and older trees, mainly ash, which are nearing the end of their glorious lives. Some of these stands are on our mutual property line so we will share that wood. The trees will be felled, dragged down hill using about 250' of chain and 1" logging line, across a creek, through 50' of swampy land, and up a hill to our houses. It will be tedious and dangerous work so very detailed planning and safety will be our foremost concerns. I have ordered a load of logs for back-up, "just in case". John_M

I have access to 160 acres but find it easier to scrounge from the city. It is hard to find loads of rounds that you can back your trailer up to in the woods.

I have about 10 acres of what could be considered woods plus lots of fenclines that occasionally drop a tree into the field. It would take me years just to clean out the dead stuff. Our neighbor offered access to his woods which are about the same size or larger. However I have not gotten any firewood off of our land since last spring. I have been hitting up an area where all the trees were bulldozed into a pile and the city brush dump all of last summer and fall. I'm saving that wood from a humilliating smokey brush fire one split at a time.

I have almost 1 acre but not many trees. Theres a small patch all the way in the back thats mostly tall sassafras. I wait till they fall on their own before I do anything with them. I scrounge most of what I have.

There are 19 more acres about half of which is swamp that I have to make a road down a steep graded hill to get to .
I have some pine and maple stacked down there. Looks like it will be fairly well seasoned by the time I get to hauling it up that hill.

I have over 50 acres. My neighbor Mike has 650 acres and only 460 acres in small grain production. He doesn't burn wood. He'll call me on ocassion and ask if I'll take his dead trees out. Only becuase I'm a GOOD Friend......I say Yes!!

I have 1/2 mile of 80+year old hedge row and 1/2 mile of 40+year old hedge row. 90% is hedge and the rest is Hackberry that I only cut if it is in the way of dropping the hedge.

My staple wood fuel is mountain pine beetle killed Lodgepole pine, so my wood lot is limited to the size of their infestation on crown land here in BC which is estimated to be only 14.5 million hectares.
As for my own personal property I have a .15 acre lot with one good sized maple tree on it. but I don't plan to harvest it any time soon.

I'm in the same boat... Helping my good friend thin out dead Ash on his farm. In all, i believe he has close to 60 acres.

Well, I have a 3 acre property, it is cleared for horse pasture (previous owner - I'm horseless). Lots of big, nice bordering red oak along road, but.....won't be cutting those (look nice!). BUT - my work owns 1200 acres, and our contract allows us to cut 3 cord per year from the property - so.....I can get a little over 1/2 of my yearly wood for free (+ only a 5 min drive away) and I've managed to scrounge enough to make up the difference. I have 11 acres with 5 - 6 of it being woods.In the last 3 months I have processed over 15 cord of dead Ash on less than an Acre of that land.Fortunately for me my property is very diverse with other hardwood including Oak,Hickory,Maple,Locust and Aspen.I don't see a need to ever go anywhere else for my firewood needs.
