What material should I use to adhere stone to the non combustible board above the gas fireplace?

What material should I be using to adhere the stone veneer to the non combustible board? The mortar cracked when I tried to put it on to that area. I want to make sure that the backing doesn't crack and cause stone to fall. Thank you.
 
Put up mesh screening (lath) before applying the proper cement. In a pinch, chicken wire would work.
