Ah yes, coal management. One benefit to a deep belly. I’m doing some as we speak as seen in the pic below. My trick, rake forward to the front, so just the floor is left in the back. Plop down a couple short pieces on the floor and build up on top of them. This way the new load catches and the coals have unobstructed initial first dibs at the incoming air. I am aware that stoves with the loading floor flush with the door opening makes this much more challenging. I used to have that issue with a Napoleon ZC stove I ran for a few years before ripping it all out and replacing it with my current stove.
Last night was 8 and calm out. Today I believe we are in the low 20s forecast. Coffee is on and all is well. Have a great day all!

The love, as always, is for the King.
This, 😂🤣😅, is for the extra little stubby.

Side joke, years ago a guy I know in tree business said to a cashier chick, "Your giving me a chubby."
Before he could be proud of himself and embarrass the poor girl I said, That's not a chubby. It's a stubby!"
I reversed it. She was in hysterics and he was embarrassed. LOL

Last night's load left a nice coal be 6hrs in. This morning I stuffed the dragon's belly with norway maple, sugar maple, ash, and black cherry. Cherry on the bottom mixed in with the norway for a quick take off. Got ready for work and loaded the rest before I left. Got home 8ish hrs later. GF beat me home and was tending fire. House was chilly. I took over and loaded the usual mix of regular hardwoods and a split of R oak. House beck up to temp an hour later.

I added some oak uglies earlier today - had to go to rock climbing tonight so I can't reload now.
Hope I estimated it well that I don't have too much left when I get home (or a complaint that the house is getting too cold...)

All you fellas with excessive coaling issues can feel free to mail them to me via USPS, UPS, or FED EX.

No problemo now for the dragon's breath. I just stuffed a bunch back there after I came back up from the lair. 6 more splits of the same mix in. I threw one in E/W at the back, on top of those coals. See how it does. The longer I can keep that opening covered with coal, the longer I have secondary burn.

Tonight’s oak and maple load in, and dialed back. We’re at 15 degrees and dropping. I haven’t put up any cat pictures so I figure I’d grab a few.

Was down in the lair 30mins ago. Splits were still burning, Bottom ones still in coaling stage. The E/W in the back still had form but not in pure coal yet. Lots of blue flame off the splits.

If the dragon had glass in the door, I'd be tempted to install it upstairs. LOL It's so damn big, It'd be in 2 rooms and thru the wall. 1/2 in one 1/2 in another.

Spent all afternoon burning pine. First time in this stove. Very hot and fast. It was in an effort to burn down coals, I had at least a 6” coal bed when I started. I emptied an ash pails work of coals earlier today. I had some success burning down some coals but not enough. Emptied an another 3/4 ash pails work of coals to get a respectable coal bed after basically letting the stove go almost out. Got my usual load of wood in for the night, going to need it. Down to about 10 tonight. Oak and cherry tonight.

Coffee in hand while the dragon's on breakfast. Ash, maples, B cherry, and some other stuff the GF beat me to.
Guessing river birch, ash, and maple. She said their was a huge mound of coals and it easily took off.

We have an outside temp of 12 degrees this morning, the basement temp started out at 72 with both temps up here 66 & 67. The first load is some not so great maple that was on the floor away from the better stuff.

7 degrees showing on the weather station when I got out of bed around 7 this am. Overnight load did fine at keeping the house at 70 although it didn’t have much more punch left in it. Around 7:45 I added 8 spruce splits to carry the heating needs through the day.
Sunny and upper 20s is forecast.

28 out now, 33 forecast high- first time above freezing in a week(?)
Lot of solar gain, hope the solar panels finally get clear.

13 hrs in I added three cherry splits (the very last for this year), and three white oak splits.
