Loaded up a little before 7 with a huge piece of cherry, a large split of oak, and 2 medium splits of oak. Barely had enough coals to get it going after 8 hours without any help or kindling . N/S loads definitely last longer. Although there was only 3-4 big pieces of wood in last nights load with 3 small cut offs, so really not bad for 8 hours.
Last night I loaded the normal overnight oak. At some point, I think, a coal dropped off and must have blocked the air inlet. I woke to a huge pile of big coals. Racked it around and enjoyed blue flames for an hour. Now I have some room I dropped a big yellow pine split and it's off to the races.
18 this morning typing to 45 so it's time later to move some wood I bucked yesterday.
Solar gains helping upstairs, up to 67; but the morning load of ash that had the downstairs up to 74 has burned down enough that downstairs has dropped back down to 70. 3 chunks of shoulder season wood on a big pile of coals for a quick burst of heat and burn down the pile of coals. Probably do it a couple more times yet.
Last night's 8.45 mixed load of maple, cherry, and oak is done after 17 hrs.
Burning some locust bark now (that low-BTU bark is so thick that I think the volume it takes in the firebox negates the increase in BTU from the wood itself with respect to oak... so I am now debarking locust so I can cram more BTUs in when needed).
I had a somewhat ugly load last night of assorted hardwoods. It was a loose load of twisties and shorties. Not pic worthy. That did pretty good overnight with a 4” coal bed this am. I threw in a load of daytime spruce that took off too fast to snap a pic. It’s been sunny and the house is at 74 currently with a fair amount of that spruce left simmering away. I could have left 3-4 pieces out for the weather I suppose I over shot it a bit. Probably will be a 9pm+ reload at this rate.
