in the nwNC foothills.....

4pm EST 37F, low tonight 17F....calm winds...

when i opened the 'box, a waft of white oak and strong peppery hickory, for sure, and must be cherry what i thought was apple......I remember cutting a few wild cherries over the summer after sparing them for years hoping they would propagate downhill.
Being western NC, I wanted some pulled pork BBQ before i could shut the door back.

STT of 500 isn't keeping up, so after dinner it's getting a draft increase if temp drop doesn't signal enough draw...

Been helping Santa this weekend, getting toys ready for Xmas,
I went back and checked the list on some of those names, a second time...

Wood burning and soup with teens outside!

Coal. Only use coal when it's quite cold , typically at or below freezing. Otherwise I use the wood burner.
Grew up with a coal stove in one part of the house and a wood burner in the other. Used to shovel coal in my dads coal bin when I was a kid in the 70’s. Did keep our house warm for a long time!

Loaded up at 330 with a NS load of white ash. Cruise is about 725. House has been in the low to mid 70s all day. Bedrooms in the upper 60s. Currently 18 feels like 7.

I have such a huge bed of coals going to have to let the stove cool off tomorrow to empty the ash and some coals if they don’t burn down.

Half arsed stuffed with oak. Down to 32 tonight so not bad. Entering a little warm up over the next few days so looking forward to that except for the rain that's forecast. With a stuffed stove I normally have enough coal to relight up to 12 or so hours later. Shut her down and secondaries will roll for sometimes 5 hours.

69 upstairs, 70 downstairs; burning down a shoulder season load from earlier this afternoon to get ready for the overnight load. Might try to get some ash out. Wife & I went sledding on the little hill in the back of the house late this afternoon. House was nice and warm when we came in. Couple of 50+ year olds who will probably regret it tomorrow (or do it again because she took the day off) 😂.

That's too funny. My wife and I will do some sledding on the hill our house sits on, we too are 50+ years old and walking back up the hill can be felt for a couple days after, lol!

We have a load of maple going, it's minus three point one at the moment. The basement is 77 with the temps up here 67 & 68, I'll have another fire before I call it a night but will probably set the furnace for the night. Ashes will go out tomorrow morning.

The temps are cooler then we like it but I'm behind on my fires today from being outside, the wife was also gone for half a day.

Love it. My wife and I are also 50+ she says things just don’t heal the same at this age. We are all one fall away from the nursing home 😂

It's 32 outside. Main level of house is currently 75 degrees. As far as what is burning it is some kind of hardwood most likely oak. My husband just opened the sliding glass door because it is getting too warm for him. ;lol
Nice place. My dream game room!

Been feeding the furnace every 4-5hrs. 7-10 splits each. Ash, sugar, and cherry. Will switch to red oak and, honey and black locusts for an overnight. Most likely a bit of ash and sugar to help combustion.

BTW, the last 5 page numbers are all big block cu in engine displacements. 426, 427, 428, 429, and 430. I don't remember what the 430 was. Definitely GM..... Olds, Buick nailhead, Pontiac all come to mind. Or, I could be mistaking the 430.

Possibly the most full with three pieces I’ve seen this little guy. Loaded it at 9pm.

Once it caught I turned the damper to about 60% closed.

Ran up to 550 then went down to 515, but is now back on the rise.

House was 66 when I loaded it.

25 now with a low of 22.

Looks like it hit 655 in the flue and 700+STT and hovering. Flue 60% closed the whole time.

Doing its best to clean the glass.

Firing up my coals right now for a mixed hardwood load. I have 1 ironwood rounds inside yet which will go in a long with some ash and beech.

I am jealous of you guys who can get higher stt than flue temperatures. My setup won't do it, although the 150 degree difference is affected by running the blower on high constantly. Once settled in I have about 715 flue and 560 or so stt.

I had put in a load of oak shorties at 12.30 pm before I left to fell the dead pine.
I'm home now (after dinner etc) and the load is done. Quick single pine split to burn some coals. Then white oak.

16 now. Low forecast of 10.
Upstairs is 69.

Do you think that’s a function of stove size?

Hot fire with less thermal mass to heat means that the mass gets hotter?

Baffle placement? Mine has a large cut out in the blanket in the circumference of the cook plate. Center of the cook plate is hottest.

Secondaries still rolling at 530 in the pipe, but 700 STT.

70 inside now.

Currently 11 out feels like 0. My ridiculous pile of coals. Stove will cool off tomorrow since I’ll be at work so I’ll clean it out on Tuesday. You can see the depth by how high against the fire brick in the back. A big chunk of ash, beech and some hickory for this load. Won’t be surprised if this one hits 800 before I go to bed.

Absolutely.

Flue has a lot to do with it too. I know where I need to be set for my air to not be looking at a cold pile of charcoal in the morning, which is not where I need to be to keep it from over firing early in the burn cycle. I have a fairly narrow flue temperature range where everything is good. Cooler than that and the horizontal run hurts the draft, higher than that and the height encourages "take-off" events. It is much better/controllable with the damper since I installed it.

I could probably char my loads more before closing the door to shorten the time it takes to get to my overnight settings, but I hate all that heat/energy going up the flue.

The white oak load.
Bedtime.
