I know this model is out of date, I am having a hard time as I can only find part for model 2550 and can't get clear answers on if I can use that or how to get the damper fixed. Currently the damper keeps opening on its own (the clip in the back is bent I believe) but we have also had issues with the rod falling out of the other side of the damper before and it's just generally been a pain, can the damper rod get replaced using another models? Or the whole damper box? I'm at a loss and can't even close the damper at this point as it just immediately falls open so can't burn anything.

Mt. View Hearth has rod and damper assembly for 2550 available. I have the same stove. You've tried adjusting the tension on it?

I have a service manual that outlines the procedure for adjustment or replacement.

I was going to suggest adjusting it as well as long as nothings warped it's usually just an adjustment. Be aware you may very well break bolts when adjusting if it hasn't been done in a long time. So be prepared

Good point. If you squirt a little penetrating solution (Kroil, PB Blaster, etc.) on those bolts and let it sit an hour or so that might reduce your chances of breaking something. A six-sided socket or box wrench would also help avoid rounding the heads on those, but more than likely they'd just snap off if the threads are seized hard.

Page 7 of the service manual explains how to install/adjust the damper.

Absolutely penetrating oil etc but sometimes it doesn't matter

Thank you, I wasn't sure if the 2550 rod or damper would work in the older 2250, I couldn't find a clear answer. For adjusting the tension bar, is that the screw in the middle of the damper door? I was able to release the nut, but the screw itself the allan key part was stripped out and unwilling to move, we tried some finagling with lubricant, different bits, tapping, etc but weren't willing to go further and risk fully breaking it.
I do suspect there is some warping of the damper door, but nothing obvious.
Thank you!

Sorry, my mistake, I thought it was a 2550. Is the 2250 the one that says "defiant encore" on the side? What year was it made? Pretty sure when they introduced the 2550 in the nineties it was just a few slight modifications to the defiant encore. Have you asked a local dealer? Mt. View might be able to help also.

Can you post photo?

I don't recall a 2250, maybe a typo?

I never heard of it either, that's why I was wondering if it was the "Defiant Encore" that was replaced by the 2550 in 1995. From the 2550 service manual:

"In March 1995 Vermont Castings changed the Defiant Encore stove to simplify assembly and minimize enamel chipping.
  • The visible parts of the front doors are now one casting instead of two. This ensures a good color match and minimizes chipping during assembly.

  • The front door latch is lower than on earlier models, and catches on a steel fitting bolted to the stove front. This keeps the latch from chipping the enamel lip above the doors.

  • The damper handle is relocated toward the back edge of the left stove side. Damper operation is reversed from the previous design; you pull the handle toward the front of the stove (counter-clockwise) to close the damper. The damper now has an adjusting screw, visible through the firebox."
@Alsulliv29 can you snap a photo of the nameplate on the back of the stove?

Yes, it is a defiant encore, I don't know how old it is but here here are the pictures I could get!

There is an adjusting screw on it and pulling the damper forward does close it, so maybe it is a 2550 even though the name plate says 2250? If so hopefully I can get a damper handle or even a whole new damper in there as I am not enjoying fighting it

That's new to me. Vermont Castings has to have to most confusing model numbers in the industry.

Yeah, I don't appreciate how they did that. It's been making finding information about this one tough and making me second guess what model it is or what I need. For the age, it gave me a year code but not the year it was made, unless this came from the 40s, which it didn't...probably ...

Date code might be Feb. 1992 judging from thread I turned up on Google. That would fit the defiant encore production window.

My model is different but the damper looks the same as later models. The biggest problem I've had is the little tabs that retain the damper bend allowing the damper to flop and fall out of place. The tabs are retained by a bolt and easily replaced if I remove the chimney pipe adapter at the rear of the stove.

Do you think I can replace the tabs if the bolt that goes through it stuck (from the front at least) inside the stove I can move the nut but the hex bolt won't move. I don't know if I can get away with replacing just the damper rod and tab or if I need to replace the whole damper (or how to replace the whole damper). .

Do you happen to have the original user manual by chance? Can you post the exploded part diagram and part list?
