Vent Pipe - Size Matter?

Clearance to combustibles would not change. Is mantel 6" deep and is the bottom of the current mantel at 58" or more above the hearth? If so it is ok. If not it will need to be raised. The mantel clearance table is in the manual.

The gravity hot air kit might be connectable to the existing vents. It would depend on what is existing and working out the transitions and offsets. Might not be worth it.
 
Similar BTU output inserts (with all the heat coming from the front) requires 40" for 6" mantel. Others allow you to install heat shields. But of course the one i bought requires 58" with no option to install a heat shield. Gotta love the consistancy with the "requirements". Makes no sense. Especially if you can route most of the heat above the mantel with this style!
 
The Osburn Valcourt is not an insert. It's a fireplace with a lower intake and upper vent surrounding the firebox.
