I've found a Morso 1710 for sale and after reading about it here, it seems like it just doesn't throw the heat as an insert. But the stove is all cast iron and doesn't look too shabby sitting there on the floor. Could this insert be used as a free-standing stove, i.e. not inside of a fireplace? Being all cast, won't it work just as well or better where all sides are exposed to radiate heat?

Welcome to the forum!

Using an insert as a freestanding stove makes it a non-UL listed stove. Most likely your local building code will then require clearances based on NFPA 211 which are 3 ft in all directions. Your home insurance may also not be so happy with that kind of install and either hike up your premium or drop you alltogether. Be also aware that the Morso has only a tiny firebox of 1.1 cu ft which means little heat and continuous reloading. If you are really interested in getting a woodstove there are good units available for less than $1000.
