I think you better play the lotto, you sure are having a string of good luck, or maybe open up your own used stove refub shop. Sounds like you will be plenty warm this Winter.

I was warm last year, but the burn times killed me. The Heritage was fine if you are loading one stove, but with three stoves I needed longer burn times (especially with the Intrepid). I was originally planning on just upgrading the Intrepid if an Encore fell in my lap for a good price. But, then I found the Mansfield and a friend of mine is selling an Oslo.

So, if everything goes right, I will have a Mansfield, Oslo, and an Encore. Less loading and less wood usage since the Vigilant will be sold.

Guys, hearthstones are POLISHED stone stoves, think mirror finish. This ain't a woodstock. You will ruin the nice mirror finish of your hearthstone if you attack it with sandpaper, steel wool, or whatever and then you must repolish it with various compounds. If your up to that then go for it.

I thought so. It's what I was getting at, but I wasn't sure if I was just being a bit dumb. Any idea as to what I should use to re-polish the stone?

I would talk to Jim C at Hearthstone but if I had to do this myself I would consider the various levels of automotive polishing compounds from meguires. Some are so course that you can feel the grit.

I do not know who that is. How would I contact him?

We have a perfect place for this fellow. A genuine castle dungeon, constructed out of pure, 10 ft thick walls of Spam. In 100 degree summer heat and humidity this is not a fun place to be, especially once the maggots arrive. They really prefer human flesh to Spam.

Beeg is off his meds again.

Heck no, I took my Lipitor. But truth be told, I just had a glass of wine to loosen the mind.

Here is a photo of the surface scratches on the soap stone. They don't appear to be deep, just plentiful.

Gee, those scratches don't seem bad at all. I'd just consider them patina and not worry about them. Or put a kettle on them. As old house owners, we are pretty good at appreciating patina, right? The soapstone is a very nice variegated color, really like it. What color are the castings?

Went to pick up the Mansfield on Wednesday. A quick little two hour drive up to the Poconos that took four hours due to road construction (Thanks, PA Department of Road Management! LOVE you guys!)

Well, between Saturday (when the guy took additional photos of the stove for me so I could see every angle of the stove inside and out at my request to make sure it was in good shape) to Wednesday (barely 96 hours later) the stove owner became bored (or drunk) and removed the heat shield with, what I can only guess was, a sledgehammer.

He managed to crack all six stones, bend the main center bracket, and strip the screws in the bracket. You could tell it was fresh by the way the screws looked and the cracks in the stone. Also, the heat shield he placed in the other room looked like it lost a fight with a battering ram. Which looked like fresh damage as well.

It was a shame as the rest of the stove was in very good shape. I walked away from it. If I would have known in advance I might have researched it to determine cost, but after wasting so much time, I was done.

What a tool, he depreciated the stove to almost nothing. I would have walked away (simmering) too. I'm sorry to hear this story, it's a real shame.

The positive was that I walked away knowing I made the right decision. Cramming all this stove info into my head the last three seasons has really paid off this year. If you notice the Intrepid is gone from my Signature.

Nah, you're still addicted. It's hopeless. :)

Oh, it's hopeless, but I knew exactly what to look for when it came to inspecting the Encore. Also, it came with two working Catalytic Combustors and the Assembly is in good condition. It's an older 2550 model. Out the door for $350. Two Catalysts alone would have cost $480.

Sweet. That kitchen should be cooking this winter.

The urge to do to that guy what he did to that stove had to be great. Congrats on not hammering him.

That's bizarre. What possessed him to do that with a cash buyer on the way?

Too bad about the Mansfield. At least it sounds like you got a great deal on the Encore. I 'm sure another opportunity will arise in the near future and your sickness will continue.

I think he stashed his dope in the heat shield, and forgot to use anti-seize on the screws....

condolences.

Ahh man that sucks. The Mansfield is a beast of a stove and you had a steal of a price. It was in my neighborhood as well. What an idiot !!!!!
