I think that is where God lost his flash light.

Great pics. And may the hearth always be warm.

Sue, I can't comment on the legalities of obtaining standing dead spruce . I have seen sawdust piles on the road, and I also have seen the corporations "No Trespassing" signs.

IMO, the corporation would want the dead trees taken down for fire safety purposes, and we both know they are not going to do it themselves. Perhaps its time they consider issuing cutting permits. The standing dead spruce is of no use to anyone but those of us.

Thanks for the tips on pics posting. I'll have to see what I have in my archives that might interest these guys here. Since its a woodburning forum, I doubt they want to see me up to my elbows in a 72" moose or the king crab at my feet after being pulled from the frozen ocean. Do ya think?

Please show them, but you might want to place them in the Perfect Picture forum.

Really nice pics!

Feel free to post more! You too frostbit!

Well fry my hide that is a lot of drift wood. You're very fortunate to have that available on that...tundra like place you live on. Much thanks for the pics.

Hell, thats one place I'd like to make a trip to just to have a couple cold ones and sit there and look at the beauty in peace & quiet. I envy you Sue.
I'm pretty happy back in the woods here also. Can't beat that mountain & water view though!

Hi Sue-
I live in New York and you won't be surprised to know that this state is also full of dead wood.lol

Thanks for sharing the pics. They are absolutely beautiful.

Steve

I appreciate the comments on the photos! I suppose I should begin, "Hi, my name is Sue and I'm a photoholic." I would love to share more but this really isn't the proper forum - unless I can slip a wood stove into more of them! I will add just these few so that I don't give you too one-sided a view of life in NW Alaska - where the wind blows so hard it sucks! And we have seven months of winter.

In the photo with the dog, the fence post in the lower right corner is six feet tall - for size reference. And I was standing in the just-plowed road when I took the one of of the little girl atop a massive drift following one doozy of a blizzard!

Stay warm everyone! And thanks, all!

Sue

An easier way to post your pics is ot open a Photobucket account and load the photos you want to post there. Then, just put your cursor over the picture and slide it down onto the image address that pops up. Click on it which highlights it and right click, copy and paste into your post. That way, there are no resizing issues.

Looks very interesting - especially eliminating the resizing issues. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

Those photos of the extreme reality of Alaska seems to have quieted down the dreamers.
Sue- There is a forum here for posting any kinda pictures and we like yours. Just not the real cold ones.

Uh! Correction: We are on the East side of the Coast Range, which is what I thought, just not what I typed.

Hi Sue and Frostbit,

This is my 1st post, so it may not look right.

I've lurked for a month, learning quite a bit. My old Earth 100 gave up and there are complications getting a new one in. I decided on a PE Summit w/OAK (Oregon is giving $300 but only if OAK equipped). Today, I am deciding whether to bash out a 45 degree hearth wall or use metalbestos (w/15 degree bends) in the living space.

I enjoyed the pics of Nome since my Mom was from there and I've not been to Nome since Christmas '61. My only memories were small, my cousin got a nicer present than I, my Mom and I were walking a long way through the snow and I had to go -- she found a can and -- in the middle of the deserted street -- it seemed awfully crude to my city senses, my uncle had a large dog team and I really liked the fluffy dogs and asked to pet them -- at 20 feet from the lead, he started a furious bark, the others followed, and I ran back crying as everyone laughed.

My wife and I hope to make it to Nome someday. We are on the East side of the Coast Range sandwiched between two State forests now.

Hello Bill, send me a PM (private message on here), and we'll chat. I've been here almost 52 years, the family since 1898 . My mother and uncle, in their 80's, still live here. May be able to compare notes!

Name is Nate...

Boy, will you like that PE Summit over the old Earth stove.

Someone else suggested that but I've only found places for specific wood-burning related photos (and have been drooling over some of those woodpiles and hearths!) I'm still pretty new at navigating this amazingly active site. Can you tell me where to post miscellaneous photos? I'd like to see Frostbit's 72" moose, and the many other fascinating shots I suspect are posted there! Thanks!

Sue, a quick and easy way to get there is to go up to the top, on the left where you can put in a search. You'll see, "Forum Home > Forums > The Hearth Room > Thread"

If you click on Forums, it will bring up a page with all the forums. Just scroll down to "The Perfect Picture."

That one picture reminded me of when we sold a home near Gaylord MI. The folks who bought it wanted to know how much LP was still in the tank. I had my oldest boy go out and shovel down to find the tank and see how much was in it! The new folks also stated that every time they came home from town, their 2 dogs were always sitting on the peak of the roof of the house. Yes, the snow was right up to the roof of the house!

We welcome all Alaskans here! One time we also let in one guy from the Yukon and we even let him post now and then. lol Now we'll see if North of 60 checks in to see this.

Really enjoyed this thread and the pic's. If you have some king crab pic's post them too.

Alaska is high on my bucket list.... someday. I scroung for my wood and I think it must be awsome to have it wash up on shore. Must be like getting your wood delivered for free. The shoreline looks completely littered with wood suitable for heat. I used to dread the winter, but since I began heating with wood and gathering my own, we don't mind it a bit. Not sure I could get by a Nome winter. Do you have photos of the northern lights? Another bucket list item for me.

Enjoyed the thread.

To heck with the pics - send me the crab (heavily dry iced please). I will send you a pic of Ben Franklin when I receive them.

Thanks in advance. :cheese:

Wow, that is absolutely beautiful. Love the camping in the snow, all that wood just thrown about there looks great. Say hello to Palin for me will ya. LOL.
