TSC coupon in the mail today

stopped by TSC last night, they had big sign saying lowest price on pellets.
They have maine woods and instant heat for $209/ton with the in-store coupon of $25.
95 degrees yesterday and I am looking at pellets ?

The complaint I have is the price of Cubex selling cheaper in areas hundreds of miles south of Maine, when I have a strong suspicion that the trucks rolling out of Quebec travel right though Maine to deliver their loads. So that kinda contradicts the cost of shipping excuse we always hear.

You know what really gets me is how Cubex pellets from Quebec that are probably trucked right past my house to markets hundred of miles away are sold cheaper than you buy them for right here in Maine. And they wonder why so many Maine house holds are dependant on oil for heat.

The only way most of us can protest something is with our pocket book. If you can buy the Cubex (certainly one of the top three pellets made IMHO) for less than you can buy the Maine product, and are pissed off about that, you have to buy the Cubex...that is what competition is all about. Like with most things, I'm betting that a dealer that is willing (and able) to make a large purchase will probably be able to cut a great deal, which could explain how someone could buy the same product cheaper outside Maine than say 50 miles away. The market will determine in the end what someone can or cannot charge for their product and if you keep buying the lesser quality product over the better stuff at lower price, then why would they lower their price....the public in the end determines what price it should be.....it's called supply and demand and you need to make sure you do your homework (like being on this forum) to understand that sometimes a better deal really does exist if you open your eyes and do some basic price comparison.....Cubex this season is a very good example of that (especially in CT)

You also have to keep in mind that not all dealers will work on the same margin of mark up...that has a lot to do with the final retail price.

Which is precisely why I ordered my Cubex.

Cubex, Oakies, and dozens of other pellet brands can be had for less than or equal to the prices of "local" pellets. They are currently better than any pellet produced in this state.

I am sure this is seen in other places as well. Not just Maine.

This is mostly because there is really no real grading system for pellets and it "MAY" also be that some consider pellets to be all created equal! Most manufacturer's feel they produce the best there is. I have even heard a pellet dealer say it on this site that "all pellets leave the mills perfect." And we know(or I hope so anyway) if its made with inferior fiber(high ash content) there is no way they can be perfect at any point in time! I feel all pellets need to be tested by the end user's. We are the better judges as to what is perfect.

I believe in testing ones own! There is no better judge than you and your stove. Finding the best pellet at the most reasonable cost. Even if you must spend a tick more to get the best. Balancing the cost is the tough part. Hopefully some day there will be a better grading system and the price's might get a better balance in the process?

I just want to thank you guys for making me after 11 yrs of burning pellets in my Whitfield aware of the different burning rates of pellets, for years i always bought the cheapest local pellets i could find, thanks to jtakeman for his effortless time testing pellets and BTU for supplying us Okies in my area.
Last yr i used 1/4 barrel of oil.
TSC seems like a great deal but last yr i got 2 ton's of Instantheat there, they were ok, best thing was barely no fines.
As of a yr ago i knew nothing of how hot or dirty pellets were, it was all potluck!!

That was one reason why I did my test(another was for a very vague grading system on pellets available). To show that all pellet are not created equal was the main point. There is a difference! Not just whats on the bag. But I must stress that my test results could be different for others. The best test is what you test for yourself.

Sometimes the so called bigbox deals aren't really deals at all. If I do some digging I usually find better pellets at the pellet house's at or less than what the bigbox stores are getting. Quality is a factor too and should not be over looked!

Where I live in Michigan our TSC's just carry usually Michigans, and Pro Pellets. I got the coupon as well. I might go with some more Pro Pellets...

Local TSC has the pro pellets also($194 ton).I burned the pro pellets last year and they had a VERY HIGH ash content.This year bought the uncle jeds from greenways in Mt.plesant Mi.$220 a ton.I tried 5 bags of the jeds last year and was very pleased.coobie

Very good pellets IMO. I bought the Elkins, which are mostly hot burning Oak. I wasn't able to find any of the Mt. Hope to try in my nexk of the woods. I would like to do a head to head someday.

TSC in Presque Isle has Fireside Ultras (black bag) on sale until the 26th for $204 a ton. They had a bucket of them in the store so you could inspect the product, which looked good. Are these the same as Energex ? Or some other Quebec brand?
