The "Arctic Express" or something like that is what I've heard that weather pattern called. I like burning OK, but you can keep your nasty cold weather right there, thank you. lol

0 or 1 low considered very cold? Suck it up, Buttercup. Drop another 20 degrees and I might feel some sympathy. I used to put in 12 to 20 hour long days working outside in -20 to -40 degree cold.
It was almost -30°C (-22°F) here this morning and has warmed up nicely to -18°C (-.4°C) now. I think on Monday I might pull some snow off my roof before it starts to melt.

No, actually I'm on the 49th, just North of the US border. Where I work, I could almost throw a stone onto US soil. I have worked up near Red Lake and Geraldton/Longlac in the past.Battenkiller said:

yep but really need to get the saws running again and you just cant make money in the "snow" and equmeint breaks a lot easier just ready for better weather.... come on someone has to be ready for spring other than me.

Okay, I was ready for the cold to start, just to burn the stove. Now I'm with SJ, and would like to see something resembling freezing weather. We do have a nice sunny sky today, and it's warmed to about 15.
It's not been as cold as what LLigetfa gets, but -4 w/o wind this am when I got up the second time.
Left a nice fire in the stove before going out to the shop, came in for lunch to a nice fire that my wife revived. 71* in here. Back to the shop in a while.

Hang on folks, they say our January thaw is coming next week. 2-3 days barely above freezing, but it will be welcome just like this sunshine was today. It surely is good to see the sun as we don't see much of it in November and December.

Last week I was cutting a hickory out of the road put the saws on the winter set up the 460 would not start for anything. Now after 30-50 pulls on this thing in the cold is a bit. Back when I worked construction I would choose Winter work and turn down Summer work if my bank account was in good shape. We had a saying back then, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going". I have mostly a desk job now with an air conditioned office so I don't turn down Summer work anymore.
AFAIK the coldest has yet to come. The last two weeks of January and the first two weeks of February can be quite cold. Usually by around the end of February, I've had just about enough of Winter.
As for Summer, we have a running joke around here. Someone will ask if you have any plans for this Summer to which the usual reply is "depends, if it lands on a weekend we just might BBQ".
I don't mind the cold, prefer it actually over the hot weather, but the snow can go away anytime now! There is too much. I can tolerate it up to about half a foot maybe, but this knee-deep stuff is not for me. It's still better than the last two years, I couldn't get out in the woods at all both winters. I can still get out there as of today, but I'm nearing the limit of my little ATV.
Back in the 80's when I was clearing the site for the new Atikokan Generating Station, I remember having to wade through waist deep snow and having to essentially dig out every tree to get down to the stump. With that amount of snow I could only clear about an acre a day. The other cutters were doing two acres a day and so the boss was getting on my case. Of course they finished their strip before I did and they got laid off. When they brought in the skidders, they couldn't move as the the other guys didn't stomp down the snow but rather just cut everything at waist height. I had to then go recut every stump and got a whole lot more work out of the deal.quads said:
This is my first year burning so I'm still having "fun" :lol: I usually get burned out on the cold about February so I think I still have a little time. This time of year I usually don't have much going on besides plowing snow and watching tv/sports. Keeping the stove going and keeping the wood racks full has helped pass the time, I can't believe it's already January 9th! Tomorrow I hope to be able to get out long enough to split a cord worth of wood. 
Gotta love those that take short cuts, it always gives the honest man job security.
When I used to go to Vermont every other week I was admiring the power lines going up and over the mountains. I said that must have been a hardcore bunch and was told the Canadians came down to do it after the local company bailed out.
I especially liked the story on how they used farm animals in a caged in area along the powerline path to clear all vegetation then move the whole fence up to the next spot.
We have another cold day then a warm up here. Our worst should be here in a few more weeks.

You're right and they just posted a wind chill advisery for here, so I guess we are going to get low temps AND the wind tonight. Last night....2 below but the wind din't blow. Furnace never came on. Bet it does tonight unless I get up and stoke the stove. Hope I don't get any emergency calls tonignt :exclaim: Yikes :ahhh:smokinjay said:
