Looks like River Birch to me, never split or burned it, so I've never seen the heartwood/sapwood.
But there are a few down the road a piece, but not that big.....those are good sized rounds.

Maybe this can help------> http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/trees/beni.html

Thanks. Based on that link, I think it's River Birch. Not the greatest, but I'll take what I can get. I wonder how much time it takes to dry (will I be burning it late this season or next season?).

OK. Here are some more pictures. I'm wondering if the consensus is still sugar maple. Thanks.

I think this leaf and branch is from the same tree. Doesn't look like a maple leaf, but I'm nowhere near an expert.

. . .

Hmmm . . . don't know much (OK, anything) about river birch . . . but based on this picture you definitely have some type of birch here based on the one round in the foreground with the "birch-like" bark on it.

Birch for sure, but it's not black or sweet based on that leave you have there. Young black birch have a smooth bark. The older black birch have a rough bark. That branch might be from a younger tree or from the very top of the tree. Take that twig and break it apart. If it smells sweet like birch beer, it's a sweet or black birch. Based on the leaf, I don't think it's a sweet birch though.
