Hey Solar and Wood I would challenge you to a duel my King against yours however I didn't hook it up to specs,so I know it won't outperform one that is hooked up to specs.I still get up to 15hrs of heat from mine.It would probably give longer heat times but I get tired of waiting for the wood to burn down.Even after 15hrs of burning I'm noticing two our three splits still in the thing.I look forward to your cold weather reports,congratulations on your purchase.

Is it the nickel door? I know you found a demo but what were your findings for prices on new kings?

It is the nickel door and I like it. Prices were retail quotations that moved quickly into the tax credit pitch.

Going with an 8" flue will not extend your burn times at all. If you're getting 15+ hours on your stove with 2 or 3 splits still burning while heating that big old drafty house, you're doing great! Nothing to be disappointed with there!

The fans aren't very loud at all. They do make some noise if your crank them all the way up to high, but you'd never need to do this in normal use.

According to the owners manual (and therefore the local inspectors), you have to use an 8" with the King. With that said, many folks (most?) on here run the King with a 6" flue w/o any issues at all. The King was designed back when most stoves came with an 8" flue (regardless of size), and they never converted it over to a 6" to keep with the times. It's not good practice to reduce the size of a flue on a stove, so technically, you should only use an 8" flue with the King. In reality, the King functions completely fine with the 6".

Okay I'll have to bite the bullet and give it my best shot by getting this house fully insulated.Man don't burn pine in that beautiful stove.You live in the land of hard wood so give it what it deserves good old season hardwoods.

I have not heard of a single issue (other than not being technically correct) with burning the BKK in a 6" flue. Efficiency and burn time should not be sacrificed. Flue temps are very low with this stove... insulated and or double wall is probably a good idea, regardless of size.

That is a good question. I have the guy wires to put up in the next few weeks; I'll have to take a look. It may have been missed when the flashing/extension was done for the new trussed roof last winter.

You'll definitely want it on there. Give it a good silicone bead where it contacts the pipe. I prefer rigid braces for vent pipe. I was going to ask about them next. Did it go all last winter without them?

There was a pretty good blizzard going when the chimney was extended, so the wires were not done. I don't think 24 hours went by after the shingles were finished that there was a foot of snow on the roof. The chimney is on the sheltered side of the house in a courtyard, so it is pretty well protected from the wind.

As soon as the shell is done, the chimney will be moved to its permanent location where it will run inside and exit at the peak of the roof.

I was thinking it could be the woodshed if it doesn't work out and my wife demands that I build out her front porch instead of using it as the shed.

Her dad passed away shortly after that last post last August, so the house rebuild got put on hold for a while. As for the front porch, I think it found a permanent better purpose as a woodshed. There is 70 feet of porch, half of it covered, on the other side of the house with a much better view. Curb appeal only matters if you intend to sell right?
