That's one of the great things about our country, you can live in any section of it that you please For the folks that love their cold weather and snow, there are the Dakotas, Minnesota, Vermont, Maine, and so forth.

Me, I'll take the 50's and 60's in January and February. So I suppose that limits my geographic choices to Georgia, Florida, the gulf states, Arizona, and southern CA. I like Vegas but it gets pretty darn chilly out there in January sometimes.

Hey...! Where were you on October 30 when we got buried with over 20 inches of snow and the tree limbs and power lines came down for us for the 3rd time in 5 months and knocked the power out for a week. Didn't see your behind dancing in the streets. There are plenty of places to go if you want some winter. Just get in your car and go there. You can have fun in the white crap for both of us. I don't miss the extra expense of winter, the screwed up roads, the salt eating away at my car, the deaths and destruction caused by nothing but frozen water and the real estate taxes that go to the moon because of the winter highway budgets.

The hell with saving the pellets. How about the money we are all saving with this non winter. If Al Gore is right, I'll gladly accept this new New England type of climate.

There's still time to get buried and when we do, I hope it all lands on you so you can be happy and don't come crying to the forum when your power goes out and your stove won't run. Geez...they walk among us.

End of rant.

Gramps, I to lost power that's why I have a generator, Also don't want to see people hurt or homes destroyed but if this is GLOBAL warming just wait until spring comes and we see rains that are in feet and peoples basements flooded or drought this summer because of a mild winter.

Then I guess maybe you should have not asked the question seeing how it may not be any of your business. A person comes on a public forum using titles like "old farts" and "gramps" and that is supposed to be cute. It's not cute. There are more forms of discrimination than the ones that are well know. Whether I fit the titles this individual chooses to use to demean is immaterial. His post could have been just as noteworthy without the age gender bashing as it was with it.

Read the post above this one. I edited it for clarification. Since I've been on this forum, this is the only poster that I have seen with what seems to be no class.

I agree, this Winter has been much easier on the wallet. I haven't even burned 1 ton of pellets since the heating season started, and Spring will be here officially in about a month. The mild December-Feb. doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet, but as we get into March, any cold blasts should be brief and the higher angle of the Sun melts the snow quicker. Either way, we're past the mid-way mark, and soon enough it will be time to shut down the pellet burner for the season...

I'm not complaining. Usually this time of year I've had it with the winter, this year I don't mind it at all. My only regret is I only got my pellet stove in January. If I knew the winter was this mild I would have waited till next year.

Not to hijack the post but there is allot of replies on here about buying pellets in the spring. Since this is my 1st year.. when is a good time to start looking. When do prices start to drop?

Nope, not so much as you might imply. The stove shops are busy. You see, it is not for lack of cold and snow. What is keeping the stove shops busy is the price of oil. (Going no where but up.) Not a darn thing to do with how much snow we have. Granted, we are using fewer pellets. But those places that sell pellets at competitive prices are moving them out. Same goes for the pellet plants; quality pellets available in the $200 range.
I get a kick from listening to the weather in the morning when they give the record highs and lows. One day recently, the record high was mentioned to be 76 degrees set in 1947. Today they mentioned the record lowest snow accumulation at some date in the early 1900's. Both long before "Gorebull warming"

"Old fart" is just a short way of saying, "those with years of experience".

Used 80 bags so far and have 20 left.

When they run out I am done for the year.

I'm not buying another ton at $225.

Will buy in the Spring when they are $190 a ton.

I can run the Furnace in March and April.

I'm enjoying the break this winter. The snowblower has only run three times, and two of those times I really didn't need to use it. I travel a lot for work, so the decent road conditions are welcome. I'd be surprised if we didn't get one good storm this season, but I will be cautiously optimistic.

Far as pellets go, I should hit the 1 ton mark this weekend. Opened bag 48 this morning. I've averaged a half bag a day most all season. But I cheat with firewood most evenings. Even the woodpile hasn't gone down much. At this rate I'll have between 1.5 and 2 tons left for next year. Each warm day is money in the bank.

Some one else mentioned this on another thread but it worth repeating that Europe got clobbered by winter this year. That's where our winter is.

Saw a report showing how some villages in Romania had to have supplies parachuted in because they could not get through the snow covered roads.

I am going to stock up on pellets and firewood because next year might be our turn at crazy wacky weather.

45* today and we are around 100" below normal on the snow fall. I LOVE IT! If I thought it would help, I'd buy another snow blower next year- I've used the one I bought this year twice. Syracuse is in serious danger of loosing the Golden Snowball Trophy.

So far, knock, knock, I haven't fallen once this winter. Exceptional for me. While we haven't had anywhere near the snow as in the past, we have had a fair share of ice. But all in all, this is much better for me. Not so much for the guy up the road who has a snowmobile business. Several machines sitting out front on bare ground. He'll be replacing them with mowers very soon.

Last year was absolutely crazy here in the NE.....Record snows, Tornados, earthquake, hurricane. :bug: That being said, this is a nice break from the historic events....BUT, the year has only just began. Be ready for sudden changes at any time. ;-) I do remember historic snows in March , April and May! :gulp:

How true, but you can also get 12" on a Sunday and have it gone by Tuesday So, if we do get a big snow now, cant complain. For some strange reason, my back isnt so sore this year

first winter here in maine.
also the first time i ever used a sledgehammer to clear my driveway.

40 degrees one day and below zero that night makes for some awesome refreeze.
we have 7 to 11 inches of new snow coming tonight/tomorrow.
this time i'm not clearing it down to the pavement.
pretty sure that's the trick.
but there are just lakes of ice all around town.

This is definatly the year of 'ice' - no snow, just 'ice' - all these 40 degree days and 20 degree nights! The money i'm saving buying pellets, i'm using for 50lb bags of salt just so we don't slip and fall - i'm much too young to break a hip!

Been through 14+ Vermont winters, last year I almost gave my snowblower a heart-attack using it so much, this year - haven't started it once! I normally would jump on some generalized phrase like 'well, that's new england weather for ya!', but it seems the entire lower 48 is in 'the same boat'.

Invest $20 in a good ice chipper and keep a sharp edge, It will save your back

I find the opposite Always clean down to pavement. My driveway is a hill, so ice buildup is a problem. Matter of fact I have to go out and clean up shortly.
