Our free-standing Allure vents out our chimney. It's been there about 6 years. We used to have an insert, but it was replaced by this Allure. It sits out on the heart in front of the fireplace. My husband wants to put a thin sheet of plywood to cover up the unfinished brick (there is a beautiful piece of copper that should go there, but we need an artisan to address that - so til that gets resolved, he wants to do this).

It's a thin plywood, that would come down on either side of the pellet stove. Is that safe? Of course as the more cautious one, I'm concerned. The stove is essentially on the hearth and not IN the fireplace (at that time of purchase I wanted another insert, but he insisted on this - guess what he thinks now? we should have gotten the insert! 33 years married. :)

It all depends on the clearance. Check the manual for clearances
if it is greater than what is called for I see no problem
