Late to the show, but FWIW, my stovetop thermo is also on the top middle stone, and my cruising temp is always at 550-600* with a full load. I'm with HighBeam - I see very high flue temps on my Condar probe (18" above collar). Typical cruising temp on the probe is about 800-900*, but I'll often hit 1000-1100* during the early stages of the burn. I do assume I'm losing a lot of potential heat up the flue....but, that said, if the extra heat were to go to the stones, I'm worried I might get too close to over fire temps. But, even with too much heat likely being lost up the flue, I still manage to heat my 3000sqft solely with the Mansfield on 3 loads per day (4 loads if outside temps are getting below 0*), so I'm not complaining. Cheers!

NH_Wood, is the Condar probe the new generation model 3-39?

BeGreen - just checked the probe - I don't see a model # on the unit. Bought the probe in ~ March of 2010 - not sure if that helps. Cheers!

Has anyone ever posted cooler probe temps with a hearthstone? These things run hot. Not many people seem to actually have a proper flue probe meter. I believe I bought minefrom condar summer before last. Oddly, the condar surface meter just sprung its spring this summer. I found it upside down on the stove top and the needle pointing straight up at 500 or so. The coil appears to have exploded. I'll have to break out the rutland backup.

BAR: do you have a probe meter in your hearthstone's flue? Surely you do in order to be surprised about the temps.
