I live in a very small house. The living room is 12X12, kitchen is 9X11 and dining room is 10X11.

Often I am curious about woodstove ownership.

Not for the present time, but for the future....I wonder about the Jotul 602.

I would be a newcomer to woodstove ownership, which is funny because that means I don't know nothing about woodstove quality.

I would use it for supplemental heat, so I could use better quality wood, cut it very small, and would not need to maintain a large woodpile outdoors.

Can anyone tell me about this stove? It is a lot of money, is the price over-rated? Or does the quality match the price?

Jotuls are of good quality and hold their value well. Another good one may be a Keystone by Woodstock. It is a catalytic stove which allows very good control over heat production. It too is expensive for its size. Look to craigslist if cost is an issue.

Have one and love it. I live in Alberta where nat gas is cheaper than water so its not my only heat source, can keep the main floor of my 1100sq' house warm most of the winter. It does get to -40 here on rare occasions but then the stove and furnace are both running. However it has been +10C all week so wood pile is holding up nicely. Wont be getting very long burn times.

I have the older original model, neighbors down the road a piece have the modern F602CB. The stove is a classic. It is a very willing heater that puts out strong radiant heat, but only for about a couple hours, then it tapers off. The firebox is small so refilling every 3-6 hrs is pretty normal.

Hard to beat a 602 for supplemental heat as long as you understand the limitations. If you want a stove that you fill up in the evening and let it run all night, its not a good match. Where it works well is a stove that you control its output by feeding it fuel frequently over the course of the day. The key thing you don't want to do (with any stove), is fill it up to full with a couple of huge splits and then crank down the air inlet so that it idles all day. All that does is makes a creosote generator.

Uhh....have you ever heard of Blaze King?

My avatar is a vintage 602. Its in our patio, only used for hanging out there occasionally. It does heat the entire 25x 14 patio very well, even when 20 d weather.
