Taking Wood Camping

Moving wood here in Michigan is the sin of all sins....I wouldn't do it for fear of being shot by DNR....

"The state's EAB interior quarantine is designed to restrict the artificial spread of EAB. The elements of the quarantine are as follows:

* All the sixty-eight (68) contiguous county area of the Lower Peninsula is quarantined as Level I. Movement of hardwood firewood within this 68 contiguous county area is allowed; however, movement of hardwood firewood out of Quarantine Level I and into the Upper Peninsula (UP), Canada, or other states is prohibited. "

I havn't bought any fire wood for camping for years. The DNR will sometimes ask if you are bringing wood into the campground I always tell them yes, and thats the end of the questions. I live in the upper so I can bring it south I just can't bring any left over back with me. I keep my hard wood for the stove and burn pine and birch off my property when camping.

I'm going camping this weekend and thinking about this. I don't think I'll bring splits with me, but was thinking about taking some kindling, since I have so much and it'd be helpful to get fire started. Northern VA has a quarantine because of the EAB, but it hasn't hit down here yet.

I've brought wood with me twice this year so far without any issues. I live in and was camping in the most severe quarantine zone for EAB in Michigan. One was state and one was private, both had signs up and neither said a word. In fact most people were bringing in wood. If I was camping outside my quarantine zone I would not do it. If I had to haul the wood a couple hundred miles I would not do it just out of convenience. I'd find a $40 facecord somewhere and maybe split the cost with my buddies. I never bring any left over wood home with me, I just leave it for the next guy.

I drove from NY to Richmond this week, after having read these posts- was surprised to see a "please don't move firewood" billboard on I 95 in Maryland I think. This is serious stuff. I think firewood will become dear in the coming months

Yep don't move firewood more than 50 miles, don't cross state lines, don't cross international lines.
This is new to a lot of folks, hopefully wood burning guys like us will be in the forefront and make sure we keep trees, wood burning alive and well
