Rethinking this single wall vs double wall thingy, what about liners? I figure most are not insulated which is just like running single wall right up to the cap and many do just fine. I had 22' of uninsulated liner and had great draft with very little creosote. I did end up stuffing insulation around the top foot or so but couldn't really tell much difference. After rebuilding the chimney this year and pouring a Supaflue the draft seems even better but I've only had a few small fires so far.

My other stove has 1' single wall pipe then goes through the wall to a 12' liner that is heavily insulated with perlite. The draft is a little sluggish during the shoulder seasons but kicks into high gear with colder temps. I'm guessing the shorter chimney is more of the culprit than the pipe in this case. Seems like there are many variables in all this, you just got to find what works best for you.

Point of clarification, if I may.........I wasn't suggesting that an Insurance company would "require" that a Professional install your system. Only that some Insurance companies will charge you more than you need to pay, if it is installed by a non-professional. I've heard this directly from an Insurance Rep..

Well actually you were right the first time Soupy . . . at least in my case . . . no increase in premium, but one of the requirements I had to follow was to have the stove with the stove pipe and chimney professionally installed . . . I also had to send in some paperwork and have the local Fire Chief inspect the installation.
