Speaking of early

Lots of folks don't like it that businesses keep moving Christmas earlier and earlier. Like we saw Christmas decorations before Halloween! Then there are the seed catalogs. I recall when I was a schoolboy we used to sell garden seeds as a fund raiser in the FFA. That was done in the last half of January and the first half of February. Out of school and soon seed catalogs start coming in the mail. First was in February and then it moved to late January and soon to early January. Just a few years ago they started coming between Christmas and New Years. Then before Christmas. This year, they start coming before Thanksgiving! In fact, we got our first one over a week ago. Ridiculous for sure. Well, we also got a winter clearance catalog in the mail and winter does not arrive for another month yet!

So, is it the "mentality" of other business that causes this? Like new cars usually get introduced in the fall. Magazines of course have to be 1-2 months ahead of time. Boys and girls get together earlier too. Shoot, many want to try out the "marriage life" before the marriage. What I think really happens is too many confuse pleasure with happiness.

I hear ya. Said it right along, wouldn't want to be 15 years old again for love nor money. Much different society today and I find myself not wanting alot of it. Too many people spending too much of their time worrying about the almighty $$$$$$$$$ and worrying about how they can get everyone to conform to what THEY think you should do, say or be.

Have you noticed that the world gets scarier, faster, colder and meaner with each passing generation? "Kids these days......" has been said since the inception of society. All it means is that we constantly evolve. Values, technology etc are in a constant state of evolution. Our fear of change isn't so much the change itself, its our fear that we as individuals will not be part of the change, and at some point that is inevitable.

I turned 30 and all of a sudden I'm looking at new music, styles and the like with the same disdain my father did when I brought home a Snoop Dogg album. The kids have to be different than the parents. My dad became a biker to rebel, my uncle a hippie. I was a straight edger for a lot of my life in rebellion against them.

I think the bad economy does it. Christmas stuff out alongside the Halloween decorations. I takes the fun out of the holiday season. Thanksgiving is pretty much an "incidental" holiday, but one of my favorites. Retailers know they need to squeeze every nickel they can from the consumers, and starting early may be the way to do it. I just don't like it too early. This unusally warm fall does not make it seem like the holidays either.

All depends were you live I'm sure. It's been winter here for almost 2 months. Lowe's had the snowblowers and shovels out on display in August.

Just to be contrarian here: I work with kids, and I think we've got a great generation in the making. They have their faults, and I'm not blind to that, but overall they give me hope. And I even like a lot of their music! :gulp:

I hear ya snow. I am on a couple of high school specialty program advisory commitees and I think the kids these days are great. And damn near as smart as we were at their age. %-P

Christmas has become too commercialized.....it's seems that the true meaning of this time of year gets lost.....I can't stand all the "gift giving hype", but love the good nature that comes out of most people during the season.....should be year round....keep the gift, just stay a while, enjoy the meal, the company, and the memories

I went to the local Santa parade yesterday afternoon with the family, speaking of early. Although 65*, and a t-shirt was pretty darn good. Hot choclate at the concession stands was not a big seller.

The earliest we ever see decorations here is end September, which is ridiculous, and children have been bombarded with adverts for expensive computer games for a month or more now.......

Some people might confuse happiness with pleasure, but quite a few shops here deliberately confuse happiness with spending money..... ;-)

As a youngerish person, i can agree about the some people out there. Not all are that way, those who instill good qualities in the youth need to keep at it. We pick it up and carry it with us always.

I married the daughter of a Baptist preacher, so I was in the same boat as you.

But after 28 years of happy marriage, I reckon it's a nice boat to be in.....
