You really need to measure your chimney so see exactly what you are working with.

I'm getting confused (nothing new there). MJ5001 talks about a 25' chimney and begreen talks about a 14' chimney. Are we talking about the same chimney?

Whatever -- haven't measured it -- ranch = 8' walls + 4 n 12 roof (6 '?) + 5' brick close to 20 I guess -- neighbor has a wood stove that works fine and he's about 2 feet lower than mine.

Anyway --

Last post, I'm buying a Drolet Escape insert (just went to look at it) -- should have done it in the first place. It's basically the stove I have now designed for an insert.

One final question --

Certainly the faceplate is just for cosmetic reasons, not sure I want to use one.

The insert instructions show that you take chimney liner all the way to the insert.

I already have a baffle up there and a liner to stove pipe adapter -- any way to easily connect the insert to that ?

I permanently attached the chimney adapter to the baffle (cement board) so getting the adaptor out ain't gonna be easy.

Short piece of flex liner + appliance adapter into the insert.

Most likely will buy the insert everyone is insisting that I do BUT --

I've spent a lot of time looking at the forum gallery this morning and seeing photos like the one attached.

Either very small stoves completely in a fireplace or outside of it like the Jotul shown, yet I'm told it can't be done.

Also, I'm now leaning toward having my wood heating source more supplemental than primary and a stove that is more decorative (love the wide look of the Jotul or Vermont castings).

Looking at the photo I attached, my situation is even better than this -- my chimney adapter feeding the flex chimney is much higher but need the 18" horizontal run (which I bet is happening with this photo and others I've seen).

32" w 27"w 26"h fireplace floor is 14" from the living area floor and the chimney outlet is 40" from the living area floor.

Who said it can't be done and why? Plenty people have hearth stoves. Your fireplace opening height sounds like you could install a small Jotul in front or slightly inside. You may have to extend your hearth to make the front clearance requirements.

I don't know of any Jotul that requires an 8" chimney and I believe VC only requires 8" for open screen burning option.

So if it has an 8" outlet I could use a reducer without a problem? I won't say that others told me I couldn't do it but I was under the impression it wasn't a good idea.

As I said, if I put a rear vent stove in front of the fireplace I would have to go 18" horizontal to a 90 elbow, then up.

Depending on the stove's outlet height, I could possibly have more of an incline rather than completely horizontal.

I think it was the VC stoves that had the 8" -- not the Jotuls.

It should state in the VC manual what size flue is required. I believe VC has an oval to round adapter for their stoves. 18" horizontal run should be fine as long as it has a slight rise to your 90 elbow.

Daily threads on the identical topic without links to each other is confusing because essential information like chimney height is not being carried over. I merged yesterday's thread to this one. It's the same subject.

PS: I thought that a Drolet Escape insert was ordered yesterday for this location.
