I'm trying to gain an extra inch in the back of my firebox to install a flush wood insert. Is it okay to remove the back row of bricks? Are there likely to be more bricks behind it or am I opening a can of worms? Would the bricks above then be unstable? Would it be better to grind the bricks back that extra inch instead of removing them?

Very difficult to guess from a photo on its design/engineering, perhaps a qualified mason could best advise you on how to proceed, do and not do.

If you want to know whats behind the brick why not take a masonry bit and drill through the mortar joint. You may get an idea whats behind like hitting a void or more brick, metal etc. Even better drill a hole big enough to put an inspection camera through.
