[Hearth.com] Red Oak right?
I just want to confirm my latest score is Red Oak. It splits like butter, so nice straight grain. Honestly it boggles my mind how anyone could kill a perfectly healthy oak tree. The house in question is close to a flood zone. You would think they would want a tree with a good root system to soak up the excess moisture, block the hot sun and act as a wind & sound barrier, but that's just me. Regardless, free wood for me and easy splitting.

I'm gonna guess cherry.

Doesn't look like red oak and if you can't smell the winey fragrance it's not red oak.

I agree, doesn’t look like red oak to me. Maybe cherry, but the lichen spots are throwing me off.

Do you have any more pics of the bark?

The weight of the splits would be the clue for me to look at, plus I love red oak and split and burn lots of it so I can tell by smell 100% of the time.
