Well........got my new thermostat today and so far all is well! I set it at the 2 degree swing so hopefully that will help with the start up and shut down cycle. I also think cleaning out the holes in the firepot helped a lot too. Since I cleaned them a few days ago I haven't noticed any smoke or real loud bang. I haven't been home too much but so far it seems to be going well! Thanks again for the advice everyone
