Hi All,

I've been trying to find an answer to this, but haven't had any luck. So I was hoping someone here had experience with this.

We're moving and planning on taking our Princess PE 32 free standing stove with us. Currently the stove pipe makes a 90 degree turn into a lined chimney with a cleanout at the bottom. At the new house it would have to sit in a fireplace. The liner would come straight down to the stove and have no cleanout. Does anyone run theirs like this? I was just worried creosote and soot falling down and getting in the way of the bypass.

Unless the fireplace is huge it not recommend to put the stove in as it messes up the thermostat as it get too hot.

My recommendation add 3k to the price of the house and leave it, and buy a new insert (unless the fireplace is huge.

To answer your question your question the insert has a direct connection. You would have to sweep out the stove after you clean the liner. Pull the cat and then get it all nice and clean.

Many of us have all vertical chimneys so the debris just falls down onto the bypass all year long. No big deal.

That's not the answer I was hoping for. Only because I already moved the stove and if I make my buddies help me haul it back to the old house they're gonna kill me 😂

I didn't think about the thermostat. So as it warms up in the fireplace it will keep choking down the air?

It could work the other way too where the cold masonry trucks the thermostat into holding the throttle open too much. It doesn’t take much clearance for things to work right. BK will be able to advise.

The other issue is physically reaching the knob and seeing the dial. Plus access to flip the bypass.

Can you not extend the hearth and just pull the stove out of the fireplace? Still use the chimney?

Is there another, perhaps even better location to install the stove? If not, sell it now while the market is hot and put a Princess insert into there that is designed for fireplace operation.

I do have room to reach all the controls on the sides. It's just not very deep.
I could maybe extend the hearth and pull it out. But the rooms pretty narrow right there and this might not go over well :)

This is the only location we have available. Replacing it with an insert version is actually the plan long term, but right now we're poor

Pulling it out is not ideal if it means having a 90 degree elbow before a first 2 ft rise...

A blower or fan could be used to keep circulating air around the unit. It just adds another variable. How tall is the opening ?

You’d just make it a hearth stove go up and poke a new hole into the chimney up high.

But yes, the insert would be more elegant.

The opening is 40" tall.

I was really concerned about the depth because of the way the firebrick comes forward to meet the damper. I'm wondering if there's any reason I can't chisel them out and rebuild that back wall with no forward lean in it. That space between the two bricks seems to be hollow.

I relocated the top course of firebricks further back when I did my insert. (And completely removed the damper and frame. )

It’s possible. Advisable??? At this point I’d really want to keep to the minimum straight up run off the stove the manual lists. (I don’t remember it). This is all much less of a stinger the insert.

I've seen large portions of that smoke shelf firebrick removed to make way for liners. I am so glad I finally just removed the whole stupid masonry thing and used real pipe straight up.
