I have several unocciupied places. I find it easier to drain the pipes,rather than heat the space. THe cold dont seem to hurt anything else unless its damp so i run a dehumidifier which only comes on when needed.
 
I've never seen it done, but it seems like you could use a thermostat to turn a light bulb on and off. This would save energy and extend your bulb life.
 
Pex piping helps. Iv heard it can freeze and thaw as many as 50 times but never actually tested that theory.

Even florida has freeze events. Plus you have to put up with sweating everyday 10 months a year. No thanks.

How about a 250 watt infrared heat lamp commonly used to heat chicken coops.?
