OP: Good choice: I bought a 55TRPAH last year from AM/FM also. My first year with a pellet stove as a replacement for a FHW oil burner. Amazingly it easily heated my whole house (ranch style, mostly open concept) really well even when temps fell below 0 with no help at all from the oil furnace. I kept the house over 5 degrees warmer then the previous year and still save enough to cover the cost of the stove and pellets! My test year over, this summer I ripped out my furnace, 275 tank and gained a bunch of space in my basement

The stove definitely puts out great heat and I didn't have a single problem with it last year...not even an auger jam. Overall I've been really happy with it, my only complaint is that its a bit of a pain to clean (although I have nothing to compare it to). I used Green Supreme pellets from Lowes ($209/ton last year) so that may not have helped from what I've read.

dlehneman welcome to the boards. Good to hear you had good luck with the stove. Thats pretty brave of you to take out your furnace. As much as I would like to remove ours I like the idea of back up heat should the stoves fail. But I also need it for DHW I would really like to get off the oil for the DHW but it's just not an option right now. This year I have Green Supreme on hand also. I had to tweak my settings on after brief initial test run. Have you made any adjustments to your settings?

Usually NOT a good idea. A backup heat source is always desirable....what if the stove breaks down during a really cold period? I hope you have at least a wood stove or fireplace as back-up.

Thanks for the welcome. I browsed the forum for a while last year gathering knowledge before I made the move to pellet heat.
I swapped to electric hot water and am installing electric in wall type heaters as my backup system so I should be okay. I set mine to 3-5-1 based on a recommendation in an old thread on here. I know I adjusted them a bit when I was first trying it and didn't seem to notice much difference.
Initially I planned to get the somewhat homely PAH as a temporary solution that I would later move to the basement ( I too have a kids area in my basement) or garage and replace it with a Harmon, but after taking on way to many house projects this year, it will be staying on duty for another season before it moves.

I agree that it would be foolish to go without a backup source of heat in New England. Where I am we basically never lose power (once for an hour in the 3 years of owing the house!) so I feel electric is a safe backup. My oil furnace wouldn't run without power anyway, so it's no more risky then that.

Seems to be the latest craze. That and stacking pellets on their side, I still can't figure out how they pull that one off. Sure does make my neck sore though...lol
