I am in the middle of Virginia. Now that you've identified yourself as a coal burner, I'm going to pepper you with questions! First, fumes--are fumes a concern when burning coal? I assume not if the stove is working properly. I have no smoke in the room when I burn wood. I still have not gotten a CO monitor since I don't burn overnight, but if I try out coal, I'll definitely get one. I do have access to some coal but I don't know what kind it is. It's a generous offer from someone who has it leftover in his house from the previous owner and heating system. Is burning bituminous coal okay, or should I really only burn anthracite. I will check these forums for more information and opinions on coal.

Thanks again for your help. Gotta go check my fire.

anthracite is much cleaner than bituminus but i have heard of it being burned. you need a good, STEADY draft as coal does not put as much heat up the chiminey. when i first installed my stove i had 3 changes in direction, worked ok but not great. i then installed a new chimney so that it drops out of the ceiling down to the outlet of the stove so there is one change in direction. with the additional hight of the new chimney and the reduction of elbows WHAT A DIFERENCE. i firmly believe it is better to have good stove and an excelent chiminey than an excellent stove an just a good chimney!!!!!!!! BUMP
First burn of the season, more because I'm impatient than because it's cold outside. It's not particularly cold yet. I burned coal tonight for the first time, and it seemed to work great. I got it up to the 450F range without a problem. The coal fire was steady and quiet, and unlike the wood, was fairly long-burning (a couple of hours for not much coal). Tomorrow I'll get that CO monitor. Last year I burned only wood, but I expect this year will be a mix of wood and coal as needed for booster heat. I'm not in a very cold place. The stove works great.

I have no idea if my coal is anthracite or bituminous, and I don't think I could tell by looking at it.

My chimney has a good draft: straight out the back of the stove, and then straight up to the top of the chimney. It's a one story house with an attic, and the chimney extends a few feet above the roof.
