Yep, they don't cost anything. Best kept secret, actually, not sure why it is a "secret", but in Euro land that is almost the only way they make coffee. And for good reason. It makes MUCH better coffee for some reason. Simple and quick to, easy clean up, just dump the grinds and rinse the pot.

I think the problem is, in the US it'sometimes referred to and sold as an "Expresso machine". But it is NOT, it's a coffee maker, it does not make Expresso which uses high pressure...

Again, the key with a moka pot is to not let the coffee boil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moka_pot

so coffee can boil even in a moka - if you leave it on the stove (after its brewed) too long - but if the pot makes some noise, enough to let you know the water is all boiled up into the brew, then it should be pretty stupid-human-proof? (thinking how I will likely screw this up)...

Don't worry about that Neoceram glass in the front of stoves today. You could throw a bucket of ice water at it with the stove at full gallop and just end up getting splashed, a lot of steam and a wet floor to explain.

(If ya try it, video or it didn't happen. Youtube awaits ya.)

Yes, the water starts in the bottom compartment, is heated and turns to steam. Under pressure, it moves up an internal spout and flows down over the grounds. It ends up in an upper compartment. The gurgling noise toward the end is the last of the water going up the spout. If you take it off the heat then, the brewed coffee in the upper compartment won't boil. If you leave it on the heat long enough, the whole pot will get hot enough to boil the coffee up top, ruining it.

A percolator does something similar, except that it lets the brewed coffee fall back to the bottom and boil up the spout again. There's a phrase in French, "coffee boiled, coffee spoiled".

Good God, It's just a cup of coffee..... when the lights go out and bombs are dropping, who cares, make it any way you like........._g

When I get up and the power is out the only thing I can think of for some reason is "Gotta make coffee!". One of the generators is just for the kitchen and specifically the coffee maker. ;em

I'm suprised this has not been discussed, and perfected on here before! Don't you guys drink coffe? ;)

I drink coffee every morning...all year long. Cuisinart drip coffeemaker with a timer. Set it up each evening (takes like 4 minutes) and enable the timer...coffee's ready when I get up in the morning. I'm not going 5-6 months without a cup of coffee in the morning just waiting for weather cold enough to light up the woodstove.

ETA: I very rarely lose electricity (underground lines), and if I do it's typically very short-lived. Not at all like it was in Northern Virginia where everything was overhead and there were big trees everywhere and fracking hurricanes. I do have a Coleman stove...but then I also have a car.

My coffee pot is a bunn and man does it make the watt meter on the generator spike :(

Last time we were out I just threw a coffee filter in a small wire mesh strainer, simmered water, added grounds, stirred a bit, and slowly poured it through.

I was happy with the result from my efforts until the wife walked in and said "Why didn't you just use some of the instant stuff???" <> After that, I decided the coffee was special enough that it deserved a measure of Jameson.

True thing I learned in marketing class back in college. General Mills at one time spent a fortune developing an instant coffee that tasted just like fresh brewed. They put it on the market and it cratered big time. Seems instant coffee drinkers were used to the taste of instant and hated the new stuff. ;lol

Have a buddy at work who is the type of guy that generally is very knowledgeable about "The finer varieties of food and its preparation" in a good way.

He came to lunch and was telling us all about this wonderful dinner at a highly esteemed restaurant he and his wife had over the weekend. At the end of the meal, they ordered coffee and just raved to each other about it. Considering how good they thought it was he decided to ask the waiter what about the coffee beans, preparation method, etc, etc.

The waiter smiled and told them he fills that carafe with hot water, and adds exactly X number of scoops of Nescafe, and there you have it!

Are we so wrapped up in life that we take all this so serious about coffee? Have any of you gone day's, weeks. or even months without something you really like? OH MY GOD, I really can't believe how so out of touch and so reliant on things some of you are. Sorry for expressing my opinion but, it's coffee. What would you do if you went day's with out water or food, For some of you who "hate" capitalism, they sure got you by the Ball's:eek:

Screw water and food. As long as I have a cup of coffee in the morning.

Edit to add: Communist got coffee, Socialist got coffee....;lol

Wow Dave - that is pretty strong?? This is a forum where people share, learn and have fun discussing things. Sometimes it gets off topic slightly but I have not read where anyone was trading their children for "Joe"???? Relax, enjoy the banter or move to a different thread - lots of choices here. I will continue to roast my beans and brew my Java - even if the power goes out

Well, there are other things to do. Nothing like a good old fashioned population explosion.

However, I do think this thread has reached it's maximum capacity of bs. (myself adding to the problem)
