Pellet stove vs wood stove

Not to contradict, but there is a distinction needed in case someone might get the wrong idea. Lignetics sells both softwood and hardwood pellets. The west coast variety is made from softwood, these are premium pellets and always burned very well for me. However, they also make a hardwood variety, sold on the east coast, that I have never burned. Perhaps it is the hardwood variety that didn't work well for you? Can you remember which type you tried? What brand did you switch to?

If your pellet stove won't bring the temp in the room it's in above 68F,
I'd try to find out the reason for that before I went looking at other stoves.

BG yes i did have hardwood pellets. i was having similar problems as mgambuzza. thicker than normal ash blocking the vent holes
i wish i had a good choice for pellets here, i definately preferred using softwood.

I'm not sure how to post a picture. I'm over 20 and thats all I'm telling. The lignetics I'm burning are the hard ones. Last year we burned dry creek which were a little softer, but the ashes kept plugging up something inside so we were constantly vaccuming becuase the stove would shut down. The idea behind the wood stove in its place is hopefully more heat and we would actually use this pellet sotve in another room that we have yet to remodel. That will be at this point the master bedroom. So the thinking is a wood stove in there would heat my husband out. The dealer who is talking about cutting the legs is a certified installer, so I'm guessing he would be informed of codes and such. But...if we go this route I will definatley ask about that. I know that you could get this stoove on a base also so maybe that is shorter.

How about a wood furnace tied into the duct work. You would need a chimney down to the basement, but it would heat the whole house. You are spending some $ on oil as it is. A thought any way.

We have an old one down in the basement but in is unsafe. I also do not want to have to go down there several times a day. We did look into that option. We use to have a wood stove in our last home and we got rid of it because it produced way to much heat! In hindsight thats better then being cold! We used different pellets last year, but still had other issues with this stove. It is very high maintence even more than my teenage daughter!
