I guess I am too My kids call me a "hippie" because of my diligence in recycling, reusing, and refurbishing. Son's part time job is overseeing local landfill... encouraging separation of recycles, garbage and burn pile. Sometimes cover his shifts if he's away and it drives me crazy when useful items are tossed away. Always amazed at the amount - the projected lifespan isn't going to cut it. Salvage what we can that is reusable and move it on to the appropriate facility like Habitat Restore, Salvation Army or Valu Village.

Don't worry that goes on out here all the time too. Not exclusive to the US.

Its called single stream recycling .
Called co-mingled recycling if recyclables together

I completely agree. But there are limits.

The problem with things like solid waste, recycling, pollution, etc., is that if one group of people have a "value system" that says, "I could care less about the environment", or "I don't believe there is a problem", we ALL pay, and those who do see a problem end up paying even more to try to make up for the people who don't care, or deny the problem. Not much different than having a neighbor close by who decides to play loud music all night long. You may or may not agree with their taste in music, but it's going to affect you. Also not different than what we see with certain fringe elements all around the world who decide their religion allows them to commit violence. Your value system can be whatever you want it to be - until it starts to harm other people!

So those of us who just want to take reasonable steps to act responsibly, by doing something as simple as trying to recycle a plastic bag instead of dumping it in a landfill (which takes only the effort of putting it in a separate bin for most people) probably don't need somebody telling them to "stop carrying on", as happened to the OP. Lake Girl makes an excellent point about their landfill being unlikely to make it to the planned, useful life it was designed to have, and reusing and recycling where possible. It's just not that hard to do, and if we all made that very small effort, we would all be better off.

Yep -- and that is ONE of the bookends and it is a relative few

The other side, the one you fail to mention caterwails about just about any human "footprint" without care for the result. They too are a relative few.

BOTH those bookends try to impose by act or policy their view on the vast middle.

Use pellets as an example. While the industry may claim to be carbon friendly by use of a product that would largely simply decay over time the fact is that the carbon in a bag of pellets is introduced in a matter of hours where the carbon in the sawdust used to make that bag of pellets would decay over years ... Then add in the trucking, manufacturing of the equipment to used to manufacture pellets, the bags (the root of this discussion), and of course the carbon footprint of the whole process leading to the pellet.

In the end an honest assessment is that pellets are not carbon friendly at all most likely. With that said .....

I need heat, you need heat. the tree hugger needs heat, and the denier needs heat. Also need all the rest of what amounts to civilization and survival.

Personally ,,,, When we discover a methodology that removes the BIG carbon issues I will allow myself the luxury of worrying over the relatively small ones ... and pellet bags are beyond small, they are miniscule and not deserving of too much worry energy at this point in time.

I have an idea. Give the plastic bags and a big rubber band to all of the kids with bad attitudes to use as a ghost costume for their heads. That way they will be pre-bagged at the land fills. That's just sick........... but funny.

Here we are worrying about recycling, carbon footprints, saving the planet when ISIS/ISLAM is hell-bent on rapidly destroying not only the planet but all non-believers. In the meantime, we do NOTHING to even admit that they are anything but JV. We can't even SAY the word 'Islamic' without being labeled Islamaphobic (invented by Muslims). At the same time we ignore our Constitution which charges the CONGRESS/President with protecting all states from FOREIGN INVASION and allow 15 million invaders to come to our country, give them free food, education, healthcare, drivers licenses, and NOW LET THEM VOTE! Why is ANYONE worried about this country's carbon foot print when there WON'T BE A COUNTRY IN A FEW YEARS? Wake up and stop worrying about darn bags and worry about your children's future!

Agreed, TJ. I think there are more important fish to fry currently but in the land of unicorns and rainbows important issues seem to be overlooked.
