I figured out what these are, crane/pot hook mounts.

I was going to ask what this threaded hole in the side of the fire box was (ignore the nails and stuff I dug out of the packed ash dump chute). . .

Kind of small for an auto-log feeder. . .so I'm guessing someone was setting it up for gas.

Yea. Gas logs. Is there a valve somewhere?
 
Perhaps just placed in there during construction for provision for future gas logs. Or its a fuse to turn the log storage into a secondary combustion chamber. :)
